Beyond Mind - "Womb of Dust"

Post by Tyreese BIGGUMS »

Hey guys. This is a tentative final mix of a song called "Womb of Dust" from my black metal band Beyond Mind.

<!-- m -->http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1186608/2010081 ... Mix%29.mp3<!-- m -->

Guitars: ESP/LTD EC-50 with an EMG 85/81 set -> M-Audio Profire 610 Hi-Z in -> Tubescreamers Secret -> LePou Legion -> Mesa OS 4x12 impulse -> EQ

100L/R: 85/81 set

80L/R: only 85 (lower gain in Legion and lower volume overall in the mix)

Bass: SX SJB62-5 Fretless with an EMG J-X set -> Presonus Firebox Hi-Z in -> 3 different signals

DI: Compressed to fuckery with a slight cut at ~500hz

AmpegSVX: Preset similar to Alex Webster's SVT4-Pro tone with an Eden 4x10 impulse

Distorted: TSS/8505 with an Ampeg 8x10 impulse (LP/HP @ 400 and ~9k)

Drums: Decide for yourself. I'll say that the kick is layered 60/40 with a sample of a kick from Chimaira's "Resurrection" (I think it was)

Any comments on the mix or the music itself?

Sorry, I kind of missed this, but I'm listening now.

So far, I like the rain samples on the background. I'll get back to ya asap. :grimsanta:

drums: too much in-the-face, especially the toms.

snare and toms could use more reverb to create the right atmosphere with the rest of the instruments.

putting the drums just a little more to the back of the mix (volume-wise) will work better for the guitars and vocals.

kick sounds good, a nice bm kick - careful u don't get a "hate eternal" kick for this kind of music.

bass: coming thru nicely, not much tweeking needed.

guitars: nice sound in the beginning, not too much gain which is good (shouldn't get fuzzy), could use more stereo widening (but perhaps this is thanks to the composition of the guitar riffs).

Try using different amps or amp settings (small adjustments) to create two different amp sounds that blend well together, that way you also get a little more stereo broadening.

Overall I think more reverb on the snare and toms (don't over-do it), and maybe a little soft distortion (possibly a little bit of compression clipping) on only the toms will make it sound a little bigger.

Mix the drums a little lower into the whole and I think it'll fit better in the rest. The drums are now a musical-layer on their own, if you know what I mean.

other than that, sounds cool! Songstructure as well. :grimsanta:

This is actually a very early mix, I think this was v2 or v3.

this is probably going to be the final mix as far as guitars/bass/vocals go. The drums I'm still not totally satisfied with but I haven't made many adjustments. I lowered the layering on the kick so that the natural kick came through more, and I believe I also changed the snare sample.

Guitars ended up being

100L/R: 85/81 set, TSE808 (TS emulation) -> LeCto (LePou's Dual Recto sim) -> Mesa OS 4x12 impulse (Recto poweramp section)

80L/R: only 85, TSE808 -> SoloC (SLO100 sim) -> same Mesa 4x12 impulse. Lower volume in the mix.

I mainly used the 80L/R pair to give the guitars more low-end. The 100L/R pair didn't have a lot because the LeCto low-end was way too overpowering imo.

I still have the same opinion about the drums.

I'd also like to know how you EQ'd the guitars, imo they maybe could use a bit more mid-high. Sound a bit muffled during the faster parts.

I completely missed this as well. Downloading in this period. Will likely write what I think tomorrow.

To be perfectly honest, I haven't played with this mix anymore. Works been getting in the way as well as working on other material (this is for a planned mini-CD).

Just to give an idea of how we're going though: Greg from Esoteric likes the track and I've been corresponding with Neill from Krieg and he's offered to get us in touch with some journalists and labels when we finish recording everything we've been sitting on; roughly 1.5hrs of material (or enough for a 60min full-length as well as 2 EPs)
