I finally need a new pair of non-work shoes after having the same ones for over five years and now everything is closed. At some point I must have been doomed to never dress well

I'll probably have to gel inserts as a stop-gap, because I'm gearing up for a healthy stretch with late nightly 3+ mile walks within the next week. I will also say Columbia (the brand - not the country) makes or made some damn good shoes, because I've gotten at least a thousand miles out of the ones I have and they still have life in them. And this is coming from someone who tends to drag their feet because of off and on lower back issues. It's just that the cushion part on the inside has finally come loose and they're starting to smell bad. For now I'll lay some toilet paper down as a shock absorbing base and then douse them in hand sanitizer to mask the odor.

did you ever resole them? a thousand miles on a single pair without any repair work is fucking insane. if that's the case i don't have any recommendations here other than just buy another pair of those

ever since i became a fashion dumbass, i have too many pairs to rotate through to ever wear anything out (i now have the opposite problem of having several pairs that haven't been fully broken in yet). prior to that i think i've only ever had one pair of consistent daily drivers that lasted more than a few years (some old doc martens derbies from just before they offshored all the main production, those held out for 5ish). and i was never terribly active or anything when i had 'em, so it wasn't like i was putting excess miles on them

No, I never had any work on them. I figured that was more for shoes like Doc Martens. I also had no idea that was a lot for a pair of nothing-special shoes.

My only guesses as to how this happened would be disc golf eating up a lot miles for a couple summers (walking on grass), doing a lot of walking on packed down snow, and walking a lot on relatively nonabrasive paths that run right next to paved ones. When my back hurts I use those, and when it doesn't I must lift my feet up higher than normal because I'm used to walking in heavy steel toe boots 5 days per week. All told I've only had three pairs of non work shoes in the past 15 years.

Anyway, I didn't mean to derail this depressing topic

I wear my B-hiking shoes, Han Wag, every morning for at least 6 km's, they last about 3 years. Rest of the day/year my dutch military boots, those last about 5 years.

On hot summer days simple sneakers or slippers/sandals.

It looks like I'll be doing a voluntary furlough with a guarantee to be back to work by 8/1 at the latest. Since they're going by seniority I'll almost definitely get to do it. And then when work starts coming back they'll call us based on who has the most seniority, so if I didn't feel like it I could say no and someone further down the chain would have to start coming back in to remain employed.

A co-worker mentioned that they do ask if it's a voluntary furlough for unemployment, and then there was some confusion as to whether a person can even qualify for benefits if that's the case. I'll have to ask HR about it tomorrow because I haven't been able to find any clear answers so far.

I completely understand Europe shutting down as seen fit, but even before all this I had been looking forward to going back over there and traveling around a bit. And now that I'll probably have some time off I thought it might be a fun thing to do because as a gift my brother gave one of those genealogy tests to my parents so they could trace their roots. (I assume Europe will open up before the U.S. unless a second wave hits.)

I don't know how accurate that is, but assuming I wouldn't risk spreading anything I thought it would be cool to visit the towns my ancestors emigrated from. I kind of did this about ten years ago, but now there are much more specific locations, although I don't have them on me now. Off the top of my head it was places in Ireland, Sweden, Luxembourg, Czech Republic, and possibly Poland. It can wait

I don’t understand why some bands are postponing their albums they already had scheduled for release this spring/summer while the other half of bands are just announcing new albums for release this spring/summer

Example: carcass/lamb of god/Steven Wilson all had albums scheduled for August/May/June releases now they are pushed back to being postponed indefinitely/June/January 2021.

While bush just announced a new album for June. Mushroomhead for June, as well as a bunch of smaller bands.

The ones postponing are using the “pressing plants are shut down” excuse. How are these others getting their cds/vinyls presses then. Also, just release it digitally for the time being.

The touring cycle with a new album makes sense if all bands postponed their release because they can’t tour now. but as I said half the bands are still forging ahead with release without being able to tour. I know for a fact Mushroomhead tour like mad. Not sure about bush. I’m just frustrated. I want my new music now!

Sounds here in Tilburg actually set up a delivery service. You can order albums online and one of the owners will cycle around town to drop off orders. It's pretty cool. A lot of small businesses are doing that now.

yeah, newbury's has been on borrowed time for years now. they made a heavy pivot towards hot topic style merch a decade ago which has allowed them to survive in a declining market for physical music. i would be shocked to see if they make it out of this intact. they stopped sending out weekly new release emails about a month ago, and the only location left near me is in a mall that's been closed for just as long.

immensely sad to see though, they were instrumental in my discovery of weird music over the course of my childhood/adolescence. an absolute treasure of the pre-broadband age. pretty much the only place you could buy proper metal releases in the gloryhole era and early aughts; i bought my original copy of dawn of the blackhearts from the shrewsbury location! i bought more legendary albums from that shop than i can possibly keep track of. alas, it was downsized and shuttered years ago now; their old space is now split between a fidelity branch and a sushi joint. the wants of the petite-bourgeoisie will steamroll everything good in the world in the quest for a simulacrum of a cultured meal and a shitty vacation home in florida. and all for the profit of their betters who'd happily see them dead if it cost them a single fucking penny.

That's what record and tape traders was for me. They got bought up by fye if I remember correctly. All the locations they had immediately shutdown except for the Towson one, which finally closed 2ish years ago. But it wasn't ever the same if you went in that one. The stock was about what you'd find at an fye and the pricing matched it too. I still get sad when I drive by the old local one and remember it's some low rent latin version of party city that's there now
