Limited choices or what?

It seems like every dealership is looking for people but they don't wanna pay shit. Or at least don't wanna pay shit as far as the parts side of things goes.

In my industry, it's usually a case of not finding the right offers as most offers right now include a basic job with 'additional responsibilities' with no increased pay.

Recently, I saw an ad for a graphic designer with an average offer. The ad also requires the applicant to be familiar with video editing, product photography, HTML, and copywriting. :oldryan:

people want to work but no one is paying well enough
no one is actually hiring

i don't know which is true but i'm glad i'm not looking right now :redneck:

Skinner missed the maybe the pay is shit line.

Caregiving cant find people because they never pay enough and provide poor benefits. State’s response to the worker crisis? Cut funds even more!

i wonder if any real change will come from any of this. i saw a post on reddit the other day where a chipotle increased their minimum wage to 15/h but also took away a bunch of other shit like sick days, etc, still making it a pretty miserable option

some of my coworkers say they'd take a low skill job for a livable wage which i find kind of interesting. it would be cool if you could stock groceries and make enough money to raise a family or buy a house. i make well above average annual salary in kentucky and whenever i go to the store or out to eat i have no idea how people on minimum wage do it when i compare my receipts to minimum wage.

also i often think about what i'd tell a kid to do these days. i have no idea. college is so fucking expensive, the low skill / wage jobs suck ass, the trades aren't necessarily any easier to get into which is what a lot of people are eager to tell the youth to pursue as an alternative. and it's like, even if you go to college, tons of the majors aren't going to net you a high paying job, especially if you try to follow a passion that isn't STEM related.

what are you supposed to do if you don't want some miserable low paying job these days. some people seem content with working crappy jobs, like it doesn't bother them on a deep level, the least we could do as a society is pay those people good wages.

A shit load of Employers don’t want to pay fair wages is what it really comes down to.

Or it’s advertised as “up to $xx!” And people go through the entire hiring process only to find out they aren’t actuAlly gonna be making that or their hours will be shit and they promptly quit (good old bait and switch)

I’ve also heard from a few applicants recently (no we don’t do the aforementioned bullshit) that they applied to a few dozen jobs over the last few months and despite being qualified or over qualified they only got called back from like two.

And let’s not forget that hundreds of thousands of people are dead from Covid, thousands or millions more survived severe covid cases with debilitated health conditions that removed them from the workforce, creating a very real labor shortage in a lot of industries.

The whole line of “people don’t want to work” is straight up republican bullshit designed to dismantle the unemployment system by making people take an even more negative view of it.

I have no intention of leaving where I am but I look around just for shits and giggles. From the few that have an actual salary listed we are the highest paying in the area.

Our problem is we are just so fucking busy. Finding someone who knows the job and can actually deal with our pace is incredibly hard to find.

funny how nuanced all the shit can be. a buddy of my who works for a similar company says they can't hire enough people, they have too much work. meanwhile, my company has been lower on work and there are at least two people i would have fired to alleviate stress.

A lot of what you do is contract based right? Something like that would vary wildly company to company I'd imagine.

We are actually in the process of rearranging our work space so we can accommodate more people. As it stands currently we don't have a spot at the back counter for another body.

In a perfect world you'd have 1 counter hard-on bearer to every 7ish bodies on the service side. Even at our pace the workload is gonna be pretty well distributed across the department. Right now our ratio is about 12 to 1 because there's only 3 of us on the counter. Now factor in all the overflow phone calls from retail and wholesale customers. Plus I help with all of the online wholesale orders that come in. There's days this job is more mentally draining because I get pulled in so many different directions :homework:

we are contract based so we run the risk of actually running out of work all the time which can be stressful. i've been lucky enough to be involved in one of our long term/reliable contracts though so i haven't worried about job security in a long time.

a lot of our team has become incredibly lazy due to working from home. we've been working remote for almost two years now. i used to work from home a lot even before covid so i was kind of used to it but a lot of the team checked the fuck out and hardly want to do anything these days, everyone is burnt out. my bosses have made some strange decisions though, like one dude got a raise and now does less work. like how does that shit make sense. i would have downsized the team during all of this to deal with the stress of making sure there's enough work to go around.

i'd kind of love to look for a new gig but i know it will just be the same work wrapped in corporate hell, this job at least accommodates my degenerate lifestyle so meh

I feel much better now, sucks sometimes but it would be sad to leave too. We make mail and people like to wait until december to get that done :necro: Old school business, digitalization has been a blow. It's outside of Groaningagain and the travel is a bit of a drag. I have some IT skills too but I'm too lazy to get anything out of that. One bonus is that most of the colleagues are nice young ladies  Odd because there's a lot of technology involved

Hope it goes well. I'm currently on leave due to burn out and finally taking some extended time off for myself. I'll probably move on for a bunch of different reasons - mainly that the culture there gradually changed over the years and I wasn't really changing with it. No sense in being a toxic and bitter employee. That's not good for anyone. But even as someone only in his 30s it's kind of overwhelming thinking about starting all over at another place. Best of luck! :grimsanta:

I loved that job for years. I'd still like to do that type of work because I used to have a lot of fun with it and the pay was good, but things change just as everything does.

If nothing else I'd like to get back to working at a smaller place. FDXF grew something like five-fold while I was there which was cool to be a part of and a fun challenge at times, but then they had to reorganize it a few times in ways that were increasingly taking my life outside of work from me. So we'll see.

In the meantime I'm just taking time off for me, which is something I've never really done. Kind of frustrating because I'd love to do something like visit Europe again, but for obvious reasons that's a no go. But I'm still employed there - just on leave for now. Hope everything works out with your new endeavor :santa:

They called :rocker: I was sharp, witty and I think I appeared motivated. They will let me know later in the week if I can come visit for a talk. They have other candidates but no way they are as awesome as I am. I might end up having to choose, I feel a little better about the current job and things look fixable.
