Classical in this period.

This thread is mainly aimed at shredlord (the classical guru) or anyone else familiar with classical style guitar playing.



Basically despite playing for a long time I'm still a metal noob and I want to be able to play stuff like this with relative ease:

and eventually harder stuff. The most I've ever finger-picked was that famous Dissection instrumental on a steel-string which I can do well, but only using 2-3 fingers. No way in hell can I play chords above the 5th fret like in that video with my steel string back home, so I'm thinking of getting a cheap nylon stringer.



Can you suggest a book, video series or similar that can aid me in learning how to play this stuff? I'm even considering looking for an academy/teacher if it isn't expensive.



My knowledge of theory/chords/harmonizing etc. is fairly weak too, so anything you could suggest that also helps learn bits of said along the way would be great. I know a lot of patterns in (supposedly) harmonic minor 3rd, diminished, phyrgian scale as they sound "classical", basically what I've learned from imitating DM lead guitarists/watching shred videos, so anything that expands on that would be cool.

yeah, i'm considering starting lessons for this as well. i've never had formal musical lessons of any kind (outside of an intro to music theory course i took last semester) and i'd really like to branch out from just playing random metal songs i've learned. i was hoping to start this semester, but there's an audition required and i'm certain it's too late to do that now that classes have already started

I suggest Frederick Noad's book: <!-- m -->http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/082563 ... X3TEJNKAWS<!-- m --> However, nothing replaces a good teacher. I tried to teach myself, but I quickly discovered how hard it is to learn classical technique.



Be prepared for A LOT of hard, concentrated work. I thought I was quite the badass metal guitarist and could play pretty much anything. When I switched to classical, it was like learning how to crawl, much less walk, again! Coordinating the hands and developing independence between all of the fingers on both hands are the hardest parts. (Playing multiple lines in different rhythms is hard, too!)

Thanks duder. I will definitely look into teachers and that book. I watched a few of the exercises from it on the 'tube and it definitely looks like what I'm looking for. Do you think it is best to go 1-on-1 or should I trade some of the intimacy & save a bit by taking group classes? I'm guessing the learning rate at an academy depends on everyone's level? (I'm guessing I'm an absolute novice, but my fretting hand is probably at a significant advantage in strength).

Definitely 1-on-1--there are too many details that could be missed in a group setting. Strength is one thing, but building up independence among the fingers takes a long time. Most metal requires playing only one line at a time, so learning how to play multiple independent lines takes a lot of time and effort.
