i'm stuck in my guitar playing, i've been trying for months to go in a new direction but i end up in the same place



i've always had trouble attempting to learn theory - can anyone give me some tips? would it be best to tune back to standard tuning?

guitar theory - modes, scales, notes, chords, i don't know where i should start.

Well, how much theory do you know? Do you know the notes (neutral, sharp, flats)? Or don't you know they are on the guitarneck?



Learn the two most basic scales, minor and major. And you can kind of form chords from that scale (like a 7 chord contains the 7'th note from a scale, a 5 chord is just a powerchord).

i know about notes, intervals, a few things like that - i can somewhat read sheet music

The most useful kind of theory in rockguitar is scales and chordprogressions. Play alot to backing tracks, that helps you to find out wich notes that is the most suiteable for each chordprogression. Licks and stuff is a theory in it's own. All the diffrent licks is based on mathematic information, like fives, fours or sixes for example. This is a site that is very useful for learning scales, I use it all the time.

Just a quick question with regards to theory...



I play mainly in C tuning, would it be better for me to learn the notes on the neck as they are in C tuning or as they are in standard E tuning? Learning them for C tuning will be more accurate for how I play now most of the time but learning them for E will give me a reference point from which to work with any other guitar players I may end up playing with in the future.



Once I have it learnt it won't be a big deal to transpose it depending on what tuning I am playing in but I just wondered what you guys thought would be best.
