Another Floyd Rose Question

Every once in awhile when I pull up real high on the bar all the strings will go way out of tune when I release the bar - what causes this to happen?

It shouldn't. Is it a double-locking system? (The strings at the nut are clamped down?) I never had that problem. If it's a single-locking system, then you need to replace the nut with a locking type.

If you change the brand of your strings then you need to re-adjust the springs in the back. Also, If you change your strings not too often then everyonece in a while you need to adjust the springs.

It's double-locking and the screws at the nut are tight.

I changed my strings maybe a month ago, from 9's to 10's and I adjusted the springs in the back.

I'm assuming you gave the new strings a bit of a stretch before locking them off right? If not, it could just be that.

Is it a quality Floyd Rose? If it is a licensed one then that is the most common problem with it; The part "live" a bit when you use it.
Also is is a old piece you could check that are the edges still sharp or have the rounded by use? With the edges I mean the part of FR which are pressing the "body poles"?

No, I didn't stretch them, that's something I usually forget to do.

It's a Rose Licensed Jackson low-profile double-locking tremolo. I'm not sure about the edges though

That's your problem there Zimmy, try a real floyd or an Ibanez EDGE or EDGE Lo-Pro and you will be amazed at the difference of tuning stabilty.
Licensed (bar Schaller, Ibanez Edge)

If I bought a different Floyd would it fit into the old cavity?

Depends on the cavity. Some do, some don't. Ask on the jackson forum for your specific guitar, they'll know.

A common internet myth is that all licenced floyds are crap. This is not always the case... and every floyd does need some maintenance once in while.
When changing strings next time check the folowing.
Smooth the knife edges which rest against the studs. Clean the studs from any scratches made by the knife edge. Tighten every nut and bolt. But do not over tighten. Then check the locking nut. There may be some movement there. If the nut is bolted to the neck from the top, remove the pads and tighten.
Then check the bottom of the locking pads. If there are grooves there sand/polisch them out. Esp on the higher strings this can cause slipping underneath the pad.
When adjusting the height of the action pull back on the bar and then adjust the studs. this prevents the knife edge grinding into the stud.
You might want to chek the bolts of the neck too. There may be a little unnoticed movement there. Tighten without overtightening in a cross patern.
Lastly stretch the fuck out of those strings.
These days OFR are made in china (!) and there are different series. Schaller only make their own versions nowadays. They used to produce the OFR's in the good ole days. Gotoh also have a very good Floyd type. Nine out of 10 the Gotoh, OFR and Schaller will fit Jacksons. Check the stud distance to be sure.

I unlocked the locking screws and stretched the hell out of my strings, re-tuned and adjusted the springs but the problem didn't go away. This time I was doing a bend on the 5th string and it went crazy out of tune but all of the other strings were fine.

Take some fine steel whool and polish out the sharp and uneven damage (burr's?). Then also check the studs on the spot the bridge plate makes contact. Smooth those out too.

Was this while you used the trem or with a regular bend with your hand(fingers)?
I found that with time (weeks) the bolts which holds the little blok snug against the string need a small turn to tighten them again.
Whether this has to do with the stretching of the string, vibration or a combination of both i don't know but i check this regurlarly. But do not over tighten.
I've had the same issue with one of my guitars and it turned out the string "slipped" underneath the locking pad.
