Just wondering if those of you who use SD2 (or Ez drummer) would care to share any mixer presets & kit presets that you have used. in your music making.

I'm just now playing with SD2 and would love a bit of guidance.

I won't use your presets, but just to get in the head-space of how it works & sounds and some ideas of the routing & mixing features (it's pretty fucken insane what this can do in regards to the bleeds & multi-mics etc etc).

cheers

thanks man

i've been playing with it for a few days.

manual is my fellating lover :santa:

the hardest part i find is the toms - getting a rad sound by myself is hard.

i'll probably just use a preset from a producer's kit/mix for the toms, while still trying to get my kvlt blackmetal sound :grimsanta:

cheers

For me personally, I'm doing mostly everything out of SD2's mixer.

In this clip (excuse the shitty guitars, they're guide tracks,) it's the drum sound I'm using for my band's second EP.

Snare is the Nir-Z custom (pitched down 0:00.8), kicks are the DW collectors (left kick pitched down 0:01.0), toms are all the Haake SQ2 (TMF expansion). Cymbals are a mix between SD2 and TMF cymbals. Kick has EQ and compression OTB, snare has GClip -> verb -> comp -> EQ -> comp -> EQ -> stereo imager -> GClip. Hats EQ'd, OH comp'd, tom bus GClip ->EQ -> comp , room comp'd.

All the individual tracks in SD2 have bleed completely turned off, OH has everything on max except hats (50%), AMB close only has snare+cymbals, AMB far has everything but the rides (kicks 50%), mono close has all cymbals max except rides off, mono far has all cymbals and toms (minus rides.) Chamber is completely turned off.

The toms are my weakest point right now, tonal wise. I have to see what I can do in terms of EQ and velocity control to make sure that they sound like they're being hit and not just tapped (but it's hard with 200bpm rolls.)

thanks for that info.

it will help.

i dig your kit sound (and the sound of everything !)

Are you able to upload a screen shot of the kit - or even send me the kit as a preset (be curious to look at it & have a tweak).

cheers :grimsanta:

i know what you mean. I have some sections at about 200bpm :bang:

mine currently are not tweaked yet & just "whoomf" & drone - trying to get them to sound like Roddy's toms.

as always... killer stuff...

listening to this, my BM thing sounds weak in comparison... gotta sort my drums out - i did get some presets from the Sneap forum. i'll see how they sound.

production wise I'm going for a mix of DSO, 'Filsofem', Emperor/Dimmu (using orchestra sections now)

I dont think the sound is there yet, i just have headphones to mix with and my computer is insanely slow. but I think with the right equipment sd2 can be made to sound just like a dse album.

tbh I don't think sd2 can be made to sound like dso's drums (especially on fas/chaining the katechon)

not sure if you use reaper, fukket, but I can pm you a blank reaper project with sd2 and all the multiouts setup for how I have it...

I really can't wait until we're done with this EP, I'm extremely happy with how it's sounding (and imo the material is far stronger this time around).

This is a short clip of how it's turning out, note that it jumps to another part around halfway through. Excuse the shitty bass playing, I haven't recorded the full track so the scratch track with me testing out ideas is still there (guitars are final though.)

sounding cool man.

i don't use reaper.. but if you export/save your .s20 kit file, i can load it & see how it all works, and have a play to my own liking.

The problem with that is that I'm doing all processing outside of SD2. EQ, compression, clipping, etc - it's all being done on the multiout, not in SD2's mixer itself.

oh.. got you.

so you use the kit loaded, all unprocessed & out each to a separate track & then put the eq, gates, comps etc on em?

i'll probably to the same, but it's the bleeds that i'm not sure if i will use...

i might post some UBER ROUGH demo drum bounces of what I might use...

Yes.

Kick L/R/Out -> Kick track

Snare Top/Btm (all mics) -> Snare track

Hihats -> Hihat track

All amb -> Room track

All OH -> OH track

Rack toms -> Racktom track

Floor toms -> Floortom track

The only thing I'm doing in SD2's mixer is setting the level of the snare mics (iirc I have the top mics at 0db and bottom at ~ -3db) and the panning of the toms to their bus. I also have the bleed settings setup.

I'll post the SD2 preset tomorrow with a list of processing I'm doing on each bus/out.

I was just recording some guitars and fondled around a bit with ez drummer, multi-channel mix ofc

and i just got the Waves v7 plugin bundle (which is TOTALLY FUCKING AWESOME) and I just put the Eddie Kramer signature plug-ins, which consist of EQ, Compression and Reverbs (which all sound nicely analog like he did with Led Zeppelin and Jimi Hendrix), tweaked the sound a little and I got these amazing big tom sound a la DSO (which goes for all the other instruments as well; snares, kick, OH, HH, guitars, bass, vocals...)

I'm really unhappy with my drum sounds lately (ezdrummer) I was thinking about giving addictive drums a try.

one thing I've noticed in SD2 there doesn't seem to be a 'left hand' and 'right hand' hit, like in EzDFH.

when I used DFH I'd make the main snare beat A0 and when a snare fill would happen I'd move the following hit to the D1 note (which in the DFH map says it's a right hand snare).

I noticed this sounded more realistic, as they did that for.

SD2 has A0 as an edge snare, which does make snare rolls a little more real, but even running some of the MIDIs that have snare rolls, they do it all D1, but it doesn't sound unreal... must have sensors that work to know if a snare hit comes that soon, it would be the other hand... ??

anyway... in relation to all this, i downloaded this info videos...

the hard-on bearer is so annoying, but I've learnt a little bit from watching the sections i find myself a bit lost in...

In my experience with SD2, you can mimic snare rolls by playing with the velocity of the hits. The humanizing engine isn't enough on its on, imo.

I always turn the humanizing engine thingy off, it destroys blast beats and double-bass.

It's not just the SD2, velocity is the key element of getting that "human" sound out of your vst drums. It applies to any vsti.

I prefer addictive drums to anything else I've tried thus far.

AD + Ableton + GuitarRig4 = main recording set-up. Although now that I have a tube amp I'm going to start running GR4 through it for the effects and start micing up.
