MABB v6.6.6

I was jamming awhile ago and out of nowhere my 5th string went out of tune, no breakage, locking nut is tight, floyd rose screws are tight. Tune it back up with the fine tuner and after a few minute it happened again while I was playing. Anyone have any idea why it's doing that? The strings are really old

Could be the strings but your locking nut could also be worn out. Lock it down, pluck a note and press down on the same string behind the nut and see if it changes pitch. If it does it's not locked down properly/worn out.

maybe I should try some new strings too, any recommendations? I've been using Ernie Ball Super Slinky close to since I started.

Daddario's seem pretty good on my ibby. I heard that the slinky coating shit on ernie balls makes trem equipped guitars slide out of place or something like that.. could be that.

Oh yeah, in your other thread you say about string gauge.

This is probably a combination of really old and piss ass thin strings

the winding could be damaged somewhere and its gradually breaking. look closely at the string. are there any damaged spots on it?

no damage spots, i pulled up on the string and it was fine

there might be a spot you can't see, like inside the locking nut or bridge. was it not just a little out of tune? was it a gradual but noticeable drop, or even a mini dive bomb?



i'm pretty sure this has happened to me before on a floyd bridge. undo the locking nut pull the string out of the bridge and check it out. i'll betchya a hundred bucks.



in fact, i think when it happened to me, the damaged spot was at one of the locking points either in the bridge or the neck. and the string IS damaged when you clamp it like that, and then it just spreads to the vibrating part.

so zim, did i nail the diagnosis or what?

nope, there was no damage at the locking nut or bridge.

shit...how did the out of tuning coming about? i'm almost positive that i'm right, IF the case was that it went "instantaniously" out of tune. the string is old, so its obviously prone to damage.

get some GHS or d'Addario strings, and start with a set of .011's this time instead of 9ers
