wow, i'm surprised i've never seen this thread. do you guys have a preference? i haven't been around much, but from my experience, celestion vintage 30's are fucking it! i've never tried greenbacks, although i heard thats where billy howerdel gets his tone. i know the standard marshall 4x12 at least a while ago was the (75's or 70s i think?). its what i had and i didn't like 'em so much.



i remember my buddy had a crate 4x12 loaded with broken in vintage 30's. i plugged into it once as opposed to my normal cab. ohhhhh mmyyyy gooood. the mids just jumped out in beauty and crunch and depth and thickness. there was a noticeable rawwwnenesss in the gain....similar to much of trey's tone, for sure at least on gateways i would bet he uses them.



have you guys experimented? are you aware of the drastic difference in tone? we talk amps and pickups all the time. but a speaker switch is wow!

I haven't tried many cabs, but I had a mode 4 cab with G12K-100's when I had my Engl Fireball and it sounded great. Then I got a smaller Framus cab with vintage 30's and it sounded worse. I don't like the sound of v30's, their midrange is too fuzzy and harsh.



I don't think trey uses v30's in his cabs, if he only uses stock Marshall cabs, since they all seem to use GT-75's.

yah gt-75s thats it. they have a scooped mid sound, complete opposite from the 30s. i agree on how vintage 30s can have a harsh midrange, almost piercing. but the midrange is also their strongpoint. nothing cuts through the mix like a good midrange. supposedly greenbacks have the same quality of v-30's but without the harsh mids.



and i've read about the importance of speaker break up (or distortion) sounds pretty cool. i guess i've never cranked an amp loud enough to notice. i know the band wilco has some awesome tube distortion coming from their vox ac30. (which i think is loaded stock with vintage 30s or greenbacks.)
