And my conclusion: JCM go fuck yoursel!



This is such a great fucking amp for it's price. It so versatile. 3 channel amp with clean, crunch and high gain. You can get anything from a great blues tone to a killer metal sound. It has both resonance and presence, and also a great reverb. No need for a pedal at all.

Hence Ihsahn stepped over to Blackstar. They're very good amps, I really want to play around with one soon.

I still love the JCM 800 and 900, with Uni we got a killer sound from it, but that sound was not just the JCM, also his RAT and other processing + his guitars, which make all the difference, next to the player of course. Good tubes are also important.

If you're into JCM you should definatly check HT Stage 100 or even the Series One heads. You can get more kind of tones from these, and you don't really need any pedals to get a good, comfortable sound. Of course these are my words about it but alot of people agree, alot of Marshall lovers have stepped over to Blackstar. You should definatly try it!

yeah, blackstar has some really great stuff. i played around with a whole bunch of the HT amps when i was in the market a few months back, very good stuff for very reasonable prices.

Blackstar are old Marshall employees. It's the closest thing to a (modern) Marshall. I've tried the mentioned head. It's good but i felt it missed something in a 1 on 1 shootout. My DSL has way more low-end without muddying up. It is a little too modern for me. But it is a nice one. And very fairly priced.



Also, there are a lot of JCM 900's around who indeed suck balls. Never knew how much difference there was between them until fairly recently, i just heard stories about it. A mate of mine sold his one to fund another amp. I got to try it out and in a A/B test, his one sounded nothing like mine. no low end, very trebly and the sound came from very far away in the speaker. (tubes were ok). I toyed around with it for a while but was not able to get anything remotely similair to my amp sound out of it. Maybe i am just lucky and have a good one... I borrowed it to people on occasion and i got some comments like: "didn't know a 900 sounded like that" or "man your amp is rude".



The reason i use a pedal is not because i need it. It's becasue i want it. I just like the tone stacking. I do not process that much though, it is basicly clean boost + clean boost + crunch. You cannot get that same sound out of an high gain channel. The gain structure and compression is totally different. I feel i have more control over the grindiness of the midrange this way. Which is where the tone is.

For people like you, that have been playing for a longer time is also very comfortable with the stuff they have, wich is a set up of equipment that they've chosen after years of searching and hours of testing things out (gear that was around at this time). But when younger people in my age is looking for their first cab + amp, all people go like "JCM, Fireball or 5050", that's pretty much all you hear and I don't belive that younger players can afford those amps, and that's why Blackstar is a great opption, and maybe even the "new Marshall".

I get what you mean although around here everybody flames the JCM. It is Mesa, 6505+, or the fireball. Compared to those i think the Blackstar stuff sounds more tonefull. As a matter of fact, i recomended the 100 head to a fellating lover of mine. Though the clean he was looking for, you cannot get from a channel switcher.



I think the only head i would really like to own is a original SLO100. Other than that i'm really happy with what i've got.



What cab are you using?

Right now I have the Blackstar HT 412a, but I'm thinking about Harley Benton G412A VINTAGE. I'm definatly not a fan of Harley Benton but this cab has the Vintage 30 speakers and costs around 400$. Isn't that oddly cheap for a cab with Vintage 30 speakers?

So, how much did you pay for the amp?

I tried one of those mini amps (HT-5?) and the bigger brother. I couldn't get away with them... I couldn't get that warm middy crunch going on and it couldn't quite do the full modern sounding thing either, just kinda half-heartedly got stuck inbetween the two sounds.

I owned Marshall JCM600 head and 4x12 stack below it. And I loved the sound it produced. However it was not the best amp for home practice and fiddling as if I wanted to get out a clear sound from it I had to turn main and secondary volume to 3. And by that time the sound pressure was so loud it was uneasy to be in the same room with it. I sold the kit in 2006 I think.



When I played in few bands on both sides of millenium I think I never turned the volumes over 5.



EDIT: I know have Marshall MG15MSII which is enough for my little playing every now and then. But when I bought this I didn't know about that HT-5S package which was only 150 e more expensive at that time. :(

id like to hear one in the room/play one. meant to be cool.
