When choosing a guitar I suspect just entering the shop and sampling a few is the best method. Are there any brands that are particularly poor or good?
I fear the shop near me will have a severely restricted selection.
Might get an acoustic guitar tomorrow.

Yes, definitely try to get a feeling for them and pick the most comfortable one you can find/afford. I wouldn't worry about the specific brand if it looks/feels solid. A nearby shop has the advantage of swiftly handling warranty & setup issues in case they're necessary.
