Two Basses - One band. Practical? or L00n?

A concept I have thought about is involving two bass players in a jam. It may not be practical at all but in my mind I see one bassist kicking grooves with the drummer, more of a traditional role, while the other bassist grooves more with the guitars and using effects such as compression, distortion, etc. (been out of this loop for a bit). In my mind I can hear how this could produce some really cool dynamics. I just don't know if it is practical. One way I used to experiment with was playing guitar parts on my bass as a way of trying to learn chords and harmonics. That is kinda what planted this seed back then.



Thoughts? Experience with this? Is this feasible? Are there other bands that have done this?

Un-constructive, Its like you cant build a building on 2 bases.

BASS supports the sound. bass guitar is supportive thing.

I saw a G3 video, there were 2 bassists but they were playing the same thing.

I've heard of a few bands doing this kind of thing in the past but always though of it as a gimmick. I can't think of a reason why it wouldn't work if it was done in the right way, a guitar isn't absolutely necessary. Jazz bassists like Jaco Pastorious and Stanley Clark, as well as playing more "supportive" roles as part of ensembles, release solo albums where the bass is the main instrument featured.

I'm not sure I ever listened to them but I remembered being recommended them and always thought it sounded pretty interesting.

A doom band called BUNKUR from my hometown do it too. 2 bass guitars, drums and synths. One bass has distortion, the other doesn't.

Amazing music!



It all depends on the format, genre and amps/distortion/FX settings and usage.



I mean, you can get SO many different sounds out of a bass guitar.

Mad Capsule Markets and Cop Shoot Cop are both two bassist bands. It can be done, but as the mick said, you need to work with what you've got. If you've got two bassists and no guitar, you have to write for that otherwise why not just have a guitarist?

Thank you, I respect each of you so much so I value your thoughts on this.

I will definitely post the results once this project starts.

I feel even more confident it could be pulled off and now have a few bands I can listen to to see how it has been tried.

It is an experimentation I have always wanted to do and definitively agree it needs to be done right. I guess you could say guitar has been pushed in so many ways, and the sickest of things can come out of it, I want to do the same for bass, it would not all have to just be low-end either.

I've done projects with 2 bassists a few times.



in one, I laid down the groove, with deep dub lines, with the other hard-on bearer shredded with FX.



another one I did electric and the other dude was on upright.



also did a noise one - both making horrible noise



one of my fav duo bass things is Wooten & Steve Bailey. Bass extremes.

Tal is an aussie chick who heaps of my mates played with.

So many dudes in the Sydney jazz/funk/blues scene had a crush on her.

If I wasn't a bassist, I probably would have done gigs with her as i gigged with her drummer & guitarist a few times.

I saw a gig she did just before she went to the US - and she gets there and starts gigging with Clapton, Jeff Beck etc... crazy shit!
