MABB v6.6.6

We talked about these a bit on the last Mabb but I forgot to save all the info. I'm looking for some info on a good recording interface for guitar & vocals. Also, are there any decent programs I can run the guitar signal through for a good distortion sound? My amp sounds alright but I'm just curious, I have a Shure SM58 and a Samson C02 Condenser Mic so I think I'm good mic wise.

I use mbox 2- Cubase sx3 - D.I Guitars and Amplitube vst

Do you have any sound clips? I'm pretty much just planning on recording death metal type stuff

presonus firebox/firepod + various vst amp sims seems to get the best response, other than using a firebox/firepod and directly micing the cab.



look around ebay, there's plenty of cheap fireboxes. I just picked one up for $160+s/h when they retail for $300.

I've got a presonis Inspire (firewire) which is a stripped down version of the firebox, I use it with amplitube, guitar rig, and cubase/reaper. Sound is going to depend 100% on how you tweak amplitube/whatever amp sim you use, they're all just soundcards, they don't color your tone.

what's "reaper"?

looks like a poor mans interface. Didnt reaper use to be a pro tools plugin?

I tried Reaper after Lava recommended it to me, It was alright but I was too attached to Cubase.

I'm assuming all these guitar progs such as Guitar Rig, Amplitude, ect can be downloaded from torrents? Is it possible to get a nice metal sound from any of these programs? And do any of you guys have latency problems with these interfaces?



To be a little more specific, are there certain features I should be looking for?

but they have preamps which make the di signal a lot more usable. my DI signal just going to my line-in is horrid, no matter how much I tweak and tweak something like revalver or soloc. not to mention you can get pretty much no latency while monitoring through something with a firebox/etc than with a line-in connection.



you'll be able to get a great metal sound out of guitarrig, but personally I'd use somethiing like lepou's soloc or nick crow's 8505 with a cab impulse. from all the clips I've heard, the 8505 almost perfectly replicates the 6505 (I believe its that? either that or 5150) tone.

I DONT use any interfaces I just plug my guitar directly into the microphone jack and record in logic using guitarrig and it seems to work decent enough

that was my tone from my line-in, going through soloc and an impulse with some slight compression on it. excuse the sloppiness of it, I just put it together to demonstrate something

that was someone's DI tone, I believe through a mackie onyx satellite (similar to the firebox, with a slightly better pre) through the exact same settings (soloc, impulse, comp on the track)



notice how my recording has no definition in the notes at all almost, while the other one does.

So I downloaded Guitar Rig 3 just to fuck around with (still don't have an interface yet) and it was cool but I plugged in through the mic jack. It was really goddamn noisy and fucking latency problems like a mofo but I guess that's just because of the mic jack? Will a interface clear any latency problems I have? I don't want any at all..

Latency is only hardware related. You need a 0 Latency soundcard...

Is this or the mbox 2 mini compatible with Vista Ultimate 64-bit? I've been searching but haven't really found a lot of info. I found a few people saying it worked and some that said it didn't.

Yeah, I got it. Although I ran into a problem with one or two missing sound clips when I went to go export the song again. So I'm going to redo those two missing parts and maybe fiddle around with a few other things. Is that alright or do you need the file asap?

definitely wouldn't get it then. it sounds pretty good for the price but the drivers, especially the 64-bit ones, are HIGHLY unstable. if you look on the presonus forums you see a lot of people with the same types of problems that presonus refuse to acknowledge (drop-outs, 64-bit drivers being shitty, etc.) I had to downgrade to a version that's 2 years old because the current drivers (running xp-32 too) are terrible and were giving me dropouts all the time - whether it was during recording or mixing or just listening to music on winamp.



instead I'd probably save up for either an maudio profire 610/2626, an rme fireface 400/800, or a focusrite liquid saffire. these models are considered some pinnacle interfaces in the audio engineering world, especially if it's more of a hobby/standalone studio recording friends or jobs for a few hundred bucks - rather than being a pro with 15k worth of converters/preamps into a protools 96/24 rig. the more expensive you go, the better quality preamps and D/A converters you will get.



the only clips I have are of my bass, I'll upload some in a little bit. DI and then processed.

well that sucks.. I've got a big chunk of cash, I'm just trying not to go overboard. Like I said I'm running Vista Ultimate 64bit and I'm looking for 0 latency and good quality audio. I plan on using it for making my own demos, ect. Only recording guitar and vocals. Won't even be micing the guitar.



Most of that stuff is way too expensive but I'll check out the M Audio Profire 610, have you ever used it? (thanks a ton for the response, almost wasted my money )

0 latency ultimately will depend on your processor more than anything for using amp sims. I've never used the profile line but they're highly respected all around for smaller studios etc. the 610 is basically the same as the 2626, except I believe the preamps/converters in the 610 cover a slightly smaller freq range or something. specs are available on m-audio's site. either way it's great for the money and you probably won't have to upgrade ever unless you need more ins/outs or you start doing audio work full-time.
