i am 3/4ths of the way through and i must say it is better than i expected from the singles. some decent stompers on here. james continues to churn out splendid \m/etal riffs

there is a weird load-era influence throughout a lot of these songs too, not in the overall structure or sound but in little things like notes that twist instead of crunch or solo bits that get moody instead of

also, all the songs rob has credit on have a welcome bootyshaking quality

that said a fair bit of the vocals actually sound kinda hesitant or even (GASP) a bit tired. and there is a sameness to some of the mid-tempo stuff, possibly because there is a fair bit of mid-tempo stuff on here

i mean i'm not looking for them to like recapture past glories or anything. in the case of this album i thought the first two singles were meh to putrid so i was curious to see if this would be their like sunshine album or something. and it is not

this album lacks ballads and instum-mentals

the last song reminded me of another big-ass epic heavy metal album closer but it took me forever to remember which one

after much reflection and humming to myself i can report that the song it reminds me of is the song gigantium by the band mastodon

I was pretty lukewarm on the album. It badly needed to be edited. A 77 minute Metallica album, in 2023, just doesn't cut it, and I was having problems sitting through it. They've had this issue since Death Magnetic, and it was all the more apparent with this one. Just about every song could have had atleast a minute shaved off, and things would have been a bit better. A couple of songs also needed to be deleted entirely.

Secondly, this whole "back to the roots" thing is a problem, and has been for many bands. Aggressive music from washed out 60 year olds is blander than white bread. Should have just embraced their age and written sad dad rock ballads about addiction, divorce and about having too much money to know what to do with etc. Like an album full of songs like Bleeding Me, The Unforgiven, etc, with the occasional speedy track here and there. Fuck the roots. I can listen to your roots if I have to.

But oh well, If i had that much money I would never leave the couch, so props to them for putting an effort and then some. I'm glad they're still around to play live, and I'd see them a third time if I could.

That said, Inamorata was enjoyable, and I needed more of that here for sure.

i don't think it sounds like they're trying to recapture their roots, i think they have just settled into a very comfortable late-middle-aged heavy metal existence. like it kinda feels like james isn't holding back on a lot of the vocals as much as he doesn't feel the need to do the big hetfield growls and roars anymore. and there are a ton of comfortably mid-tempo songs on here which is why the album as a whole feels like a bit of a slog even though there are cool riffs and neat moments all over the place

Instead of the growls and roars, would have settled for some of those impressively catchy vocal lines and melodies, ala Nothing Else Matters, Mama Said, and more. But alas.

A whole album of this

Just put this on now.
4th song in. Too many riffs on repeat and the songs are too long because of it, this started with St Anger and it still bothers me.

Anyway, it's not bad either so far. Will post some more after the last song.

Mix wise... the fucking wet cardboard kickdrum sound is very annoying because its so much up front.
Guitar sound couldve been more aggressive like get some 200 watt Marshall Plexi's in there and lets goooooo. So it still sounds a bit restrained.

James does sound fine IMO.

So, not a bad metallica album but that's about it. It's mostly a mehtallica album... didnt expect much more either.

And then they go play this live in this style and with this performance... and I'm a huge fan again.
What a fucking beautiful cover.



And with this live performance, small setting, no big bells and whistles, they do sound fucking awesome.

Room of Mirrors is my favorite. Crown of Barbed Wire is growing on me and it's definitely my second favorite.

Overall, the entire record could've been 'Black album part 2'. Kinda like black album is 'Load' and this one would be 'ReLoad'.

I don't mind this record. I didn't listen to hardwired but I am assuming that metallica just recently started implementing more melody into their song structure, please correct me if I'm wrong. I think there's some real stand out tracks as well. I think shadows is a great song as well as the last song.

Was hearing this again. It's absolutely baffling that Kirk has phoned it just about every solo. He has put out some good solos, but the stuff he does now is completely forgettable and does nothing for the songs at all. I gather that everything is just improvised in the studio until something comes out that meets approval, but all his solos just sound like placeholder jams.

That said, It's a pretty inoffensive album. Some are better than others but overall it feels pretty uninspired. Can't blame it on "modern Metallica" because I enjoy Death Magnetic, and Hardwired to some degree. The songs structures', riffs, solos, etc just aren't very exciting and kind of dissipate into the background after a while of listening.

Devil's Dance is such an underrated track. Slow, hard-stomping sinister riffs done the Hetfield way. I always thought it was Metallica's answer to the songs on Far Beyond Driven or Trendkill.

Nowadays, I'm much more interested in hearing more tracks like that from Metallica rather than a standard thrash track.
