Charlie Benante To Sit Out Immediate Anthrax Shows, Replacement Announced
New York City, NY thrash legends Anthrax have announced that their drummer Charlie Benante will be absent from their immediate live shows due to requiring a “minor procedure”. In his place will be Derek Roddy (ex-Hate Eternal, Malevolent Creation, etc.).
A statement issued by Anthrax yesterday (January 20th) reads:
“Our man who beats the beat – Charlie Benante – has stepped away from the tour for a few days to have a minor procedure done and will not be at the next few shows. Never fear, the formidable Derek Roddy is filling in while Charlie is away – and no worries, Charlie will be back soon. In the meantime, the metal is still heavy and the show must go on. We’ll see you there!”
The band’s tour with Black Label Society and Exodus kicked off this week and runs as follows:

Ready for a new anthrax, last 2 have been slammin'
Yeah of the big four I could never really get into these dudes. Party thrash really isn't for me.
Party thrash could definitely describe spreading the disease, among the living, and state of euphoria, but I think they tried to get away from that in 1990 with persistence of time
Also gloryhole era bush era is too goddamn overlooked, they wrote some killer stuff with him on vocals

We need some videos to back that up Ryan

I think those gloryhole era albums were necessary. They fit the times, though not very popular, it kept the band afloat
Always loved this song

This is my favorite bush anthrax song, shame songs like these are no longer regarded by the band
never liked anthrax and never understood how they were considered one of the big 4. do they actually have a really big fan base?
All about numbers. They've sold a shit ton more albums than exodus
That and for whatever reason they just had really good PR back in the day. Scott Ian was for whatever reason the go to interviewee or commenter on anything related to metal on mtv or vh1 it seemed like, so they got tons of exposure that way as well.

I agree with the overall feeling here. Anthrax should never have been a part of the Big 4.
But their PR was just one of the best in those days. The highlight being their guest appearance on "Married With Children". I mean, everyone in the US and Europe watched that show!!! And their popularity just went sky high after that! (kinda reminds me of the Motörhead appearance on "The Young Ones" seires. After that episode, everyone also knew who Motörhead was).

That was horrible lol his attempt at putting blast beats into a dream theater lick was really bad. He really wasn't meant for that band.

He's a great drummer. Just how he left hate eternal was sad and a total backstab.

Strange dude.
Explain.
I'd have to search for the interviews. Basically Roddy thought he wasn't making enough money in HE and right before going on a tour, he calls it quits, leaving his bandmates in the shit. Rutan was able to get another drummer just in time otherwise they'd had to cancel the tour and miss their income. IIRC.
But how it supposedly went down was just messed up.

What’s funny is that Erik probably knew like 10 drummers at the time who had the potential and availability to replace Derek just from his work at Mana studios. “Okay…. Bye.”

It was a Euro tour and then got the Danish dude to fill in.
They had about 3 days to rehearse here in Rotterdam. Erik was using uni777's JCM900 stack at his rehearsal's place.
But I forget the details of Roddy leaving.

i really dislike the whole concept of 'the big 4' in general. silly marketing invention
and yeah i remember reading some stuff from roddy around that time, he was really up his own ass. left a bad impression, and i haven't paid any attention to the dude ever since. is he just a session hard-on bearer now or something

I think he is.
And Anthrax? I also never understood their appeal or reason for being in the same league as Metallica and Slayer.

Number 4 should have been Testament or Exodus honestly.

number four should not exist because the concept of the big four is ridiculous

Might as well get rid of genres too then. What a silly concept that is.

I agree with stormy actually.
But I guess there is some kind of musical history merit to it.
