i don't listen to most of the stuff i listened to in my early teens like korn or manson, i still like them but rarely jam. i listen to a lot less metal now but still enjoy. listening to a lot more hardcore, post metal/rock, and classical guitar these days

Most death metal.
Classics still rule. But new stuff... eh. Not so much. Just a few new bands that keep that grimey filthy sound.

there are definitely bands that have lost their appeal over the years but as far as like whole categories or anything like that, i don't think so

Not into the fruital stuff like I used to be.
A handful of bands I still keep tabs on for new releases. Guttural Secrete, Wormed, Defeated Sanity, Devourment.
Only new fruital band I’m digging is 200 stab wounds.

This. I still give all that stuff I jammed regularly from the late gloryhole era into the early 2000s spins. If it wasn't for the nostalgia of it I don't even know that I'd jam them to be completely honest.
The same goes for all the grind stuff I was into around the same time.

these guys are still jamming harder than the new blood and that's sad in a way

I’m ready for another wormed album. Guttural Secrete is long overdue, too.

I don't really jam the ultra br00ts goregrind stuff anymore. Maybe a song or two every now and again but it doesn't hit like it used to.

over the past year, i'm beginning to find that for some of the bands from my youth that i can still enjoy, the desire to actually listen to them has completely passed.
e.g., i don't dislike NIN all of a sudden, but i also don't have a need to ever listen to TDS again. and the desire to listen to a ton of metal is still quite weak itp, i find myself very annoyed at scrapple music because despite my listening habits, it still pumps all my playlists and recommendations full of it.

i still say faith no more are in my top 3 bands but i very rarely put them on anymore, but i know there will come a time when they will be right up there making me happy

Alice in Chains because of Layne's whiney lyrics about drugs and suffering.

i feel like i have goom'd a bit. i'm just not as impressed anymore by a lot of what i'm hearing in the metal world. death/extreme metal feels very stagnant. a sea of old school death metal worship, hyper technical wankery, and breakdowns. creative riffs and song writing feel rare these days in metal

yeah its hard to avoid the feeling that most of the artistic depths have already been mined where metal is concerned. every primary form has long since already been taken to its extreme ends, and every one of them has been cross-bred with all the others and also every other non-metal form out there to boot. it feels a bit outmoded to me.
of course there's always gonna be new people discovering it and trying to make it for their own reasons and i don't begrudge anyone for their enthusiasm, but it's all been done. the kids can have their sanguine sugar bog, and i can laugh and dismiss them when they try to convince me that there's something worth listening to there.

the only genre in my opinion that has really continued to innovate has been black metal - which is also hilarious because so many black metal fans are closed minded true kvltists.

i thought the dream unending album from last year was pretty good, but also it will never be the first or even fifth thing i reach for if that's the style i'm trying to listen to. so i agree there are good things coming out. but for better or worse, a lot of it just reduces to 'new version of old thing'
