I like all these bands and would be thrilled if any of their stuff randomly came on at a bar or something, but I don't even listen to most of them anymore. The ones that still get listens at least a few times per year would be:
Atheist
Death
Demilich
Cynic
Bolt Thrower
But I don't listen to very much music in general these days. I'm sure that will swing back in the other direction at some point.
most of you all like death the most. now rank the death albums
Individual thought patterns
Leprosy
Human
Symbolic
The Sound of perseverance
Scream bloody gore
Spiritual Healing
Itp
Human
Leprosy
Symbolic
Healing
Sop
Sbg

i really enjoy the musicianship and songwriting on their mid-late era stuff. even after coming back around to enjoying them after being turned off for most of the last 20 years, i find chuck in sanctimonious mode a bit difficult to stomach. and he was just not at all a good vocalist
in conclusion, death is a land of contrasts

deaths later albums are much better than their earlier albums
they were a band that switched members too often. that always creates weird inconsistencies in a bands zeitgeist. honestly i wish we could have had a death where sean and paul (of cynic) could have stayed for multiple albums

i liked chuck's vocals for the most part in his mid to late career but towards the end he reverted back to the high pitched shrill kind of vocal. like his vocals in the video below. was this a conscious decision or was his voice getting worse? i read somewhere that he was tired of doing vocals and that was part of his motivation to start control denied

i always assumed it was a conscious aesthetic choice, never really occurred to me that his voice might've just been fucked but yeah, that video right there is a perfect example of his terrible vocal style
