holy shit dude!!!!!!

thats one of the songs i'd still like to learn :xx:::::::::::::::::::;;;;

and I agree with you on CTT, it's the best HE album imo, next to I, Monarch. :bang:

I was also wondering if you could tell me a little about your "online mixing thing"? I study music production/studio techs, and I'm always interested in what others are doing in that field.

Yea it's a strange thing because even though CTT sounds more raw, I think the production is clearer than the other records. Wasn't too crazy with tim's playing though. But man, Hate Eternal sounds pummeling live and I'd just like to hear that sound on the actual albums.

I've been into audio for a long time, just as long as I've been playing guitar, like 18 years. It's been about almost 12 years now where I've been practicing audio especially with other bands and whatnot. About 6 years ago after certification I've been solely an online service and even though I pretty cover any style I'd like to be a go to service for metal styles. My sound is different, I know that. I don't shoot for the "modern" flat, quantized, and digital sound. I think tone wise the late 90's was a good period but if you can coupled that with modern ways of sounding fuller but still organic, I'm totally into that. This is something that supports me, or at least partially. And you know economic times are tough right now.

Great!

I agree with the sound of nowadays. I really dislike the digital, over polished sound that a lot of metal bands go for. I like to record the magic and the actual playing and musicianship that comes from a musician, a humanbeing, and a band. In the end, I always think the result is better and more satisfying.

Do you earn enough to make a living or is it something you do aside to say, a normal day job?

Btw, I think Tim's drumming is amazing on that record. Mind you, the hard-on bearer was only 18 years old back then!! I like hearing a few flaws here and there... it makes it human, thus have more emotion. Anyway, that's my point of view.

Great covers bob

Also, could you or maybe Vahmpy or someone quickly tab out the bit to Dominate around the 01:05 mark, for some reason I can't seem to figure out the right notes on this part at all and it's doing my head in.

Man it's getting awful. The kiddies are obsessed with quantizing every note, I don't even think they know what manual editing is because most major audio software has quantizing now pretty much. They're ALL about the guitar emulation softwares, probally can't mic a cab. And don't forget your standard drum samples. It's all figured out for you. Theres really hardly any "engineering" left behind it. Same generic sound, flat, perfect digital editing. They love it. Unfortunately, thats how the times roll with everything. If lets say one hard-on bearer makes a name for himself for some fortutous timing or luck and has this particular sound and method, well then all the kiddies want that sound. Becomes fashionable, like anything else.

I definitely do this and my "normal" job. I'd love to be able to do just this but well...I'm just always working man lol :tear:

No you know, its not that he is no good, by any means I'm not saying that. I jammed with the dude some years ago. I just think at the time he was over reaching a bit; maybe it was too early.

One reason it's such a popular method of doing things is that (i think) it's a lot easier than doing it the old fashion way. If someone wants to start a band or record music it can be very difficult if they can't find other musicians to work/record with. Rather than spending time looking for musicians, writing music, rehearsing, and ect, it's a lot easier for that person to just go buy a recording interface, download vst stuff, and do everything by their self.

I even plan on doing this, just for my demos though. When things get rolling I won't be drifting into that trend of that over digital produced sound.

But full bands doing this should go ahead and give it up.. a la dethcore

That's just it though, I hear the "it's easier" argument a lot and for me it doesn't fly. Anything worth anything is never easy. And anything easy loses its value over time. My burning question for those who scout the easy way out through a craft is why get involved in that craft to begin with? You know what I mean? Like, destroy something to expedite the result of it rather than learn and grow with its process and be proud of the result rather than lusting after it. That's the work ethic thats gotten us so far, and now ironically, by its success, it will is turning on itself because it allows access to the unappreciative and unwilling, who again only want the glory without the work. Zim don't get me wrong, I have no problem with what you proposed in the sense of easier work flow for the musician to get compositions and ideas together. But also looking at what you wrote at the end there I also see you understand pretty much where I'm coming from here. I think the ease of that is is a good thing. But the issue arises out of how this has turned into a sub-culture of "engineering". Really, a parody of itself. All that remains is this fake-glorious so called craft with the term "engineering" loosely thrown around leaving no value to true patrons of the crafts who respect it and work hard at it and understand it. In short, it devalues the craft. The craft doesn't even exist. It's a diluted pseudo version of itself.

I think anybody should think hard about anything they are truly passionate about and also truly gifted to do and then think about the idea of that talent being replaced or cut down in value because the path to the end result exists in the form of a shortcut in which then anybody can get their hands on. Then think about what detriment this notion (regardless of the craft or talent) has on existence over time: "Leveled playing fields"; "Great Equalizations of All" then yeilding "No Value to anything"; "Nothing to Strive For".

Yes I've thought about this matter a lot. Yes it's personal but also a universal matter.
Hey great words you put there. I couldn't agree more.
and

I can't really say I know everything that an audio engineer does or how much work goes into producing music so it's a little hard for me to have perspective on the whole issue really. But I understand what your saying about destroying and mocking a craft, I hate to see it happen. And to me these bands that use this method for production all sound the same (obviously) but I don't just mean production wise.

(off the engineering topic) A lot of these bands follow a trend and the music is not the least bit different, artistic, or atmospheric. You know what I'm saying? I could listen to MA (for example) close my eyes and see art come to life. The production sound is so different on all of their albums and just paints a beautiful picture. But I listen to this stuff and I hear loud, obnoxious, overused boring material. It seems today it's all about being the most "fruital :necro: /technical/extreme" with the least amount of work.

I also think it's a matter of bands fearing that if they don't sound 100% accurate, ect they'll not be as liked as much as the next band. ect

Absolutely man, and what you are saying here is precisely the symptom of the breakdown of the craft. I totally get what you mean by hearing art come to life using the MA records as an example. If one thinks clearly of this cycle one can see crap feeds the other crap. It's a funny thing man, one of the first times I started talking about this subject was like 4 or 5 years ago at the cakewalk forums and they didnt get it. In fact they sort of mocked all of this. I said ok whatever just mark my words. Those same guys are now wondering why it's so difficult getting work these days. Because some clueless spoiled brat is doing what you could do using shortcuts and pushing a few buttons churning out the same as you said loud, obnoxious, overused boring material on a conveyor belt mentality.
