If there were no vocals, or perhaps better ones, I would enjoy this song more.

This has always been one of my favorite Metallica songs. It works nicely if you listen to it right after you listen to Call of Ktulu as well.

Need a new signature? Why not Zoidberg? (V) (;,,;) (V)

What is the general opinion on Symphony and Metallica?
I love it and so do my friends, i'm sure with the internet being the breeding ground for negativity that it is, there are varying opinions out there.

yeah, s&m had some odd choices...no sanitarium or fade to black, but they did fuel.

Re: The Thing That Should Not Be!
My general opinion is that thrash is entirely incompatible with orchestral music, and that nothing on S&M from their thrash period has any redemptive quality whatsoever. A few of the other songs were cool, but I still prefer the originals. This also applies to Call of Ktulu in particular, because it's a thrashy song written completely without need of extra orchestration. They're doing all these cool arpeggios, they don't need a bunch of fucking strings to illustrate what they're doing. And in any case, the tune completely changes, because the orchestra needs something to do, and Michael Kaman was a shitty composer and had no business adding shit to that song.

They chose an awful setlist.
And even the ones that had potential to work well, were done awfully.
Shit album IMO.
And The "Thing That Should Not Be" is the worst song on Puppets. There. I said it.

I think it was Michael Kaman that made most, if not all, of the decisions regarding the setlist. I thought some of the songs were well executed, others not so much. "No Leaf Clover" is kind of catchy, and sounds as if it were written with orchestra in mind. If it were possible to get a copy of the album without orchestra in the mix, I can't say I'd notice anything missing on a good number of songs.
