The older I get I recognize that R.E.M. we're one of the best bands ever

i really need to listen to more of their stuff, i got into the early material through a fellating lover who is/was obsessed with them for many many years. i think my main problem though is just that middle period where they were at their commercial peak in the late 80s to mid gloryhole era . besides never really enjoying it all that much/never needing to hear any of the singles again, i also have a lot of strong associations with that material which are overwhelmingly negative (also the reason i've pretty much jettisoned NIN, even though i do think the classics are still great)

Ahhh. I started late with delving into thier discography. Besides the singles I think the only albums I heard was automatic and monster

yeah i heard a LOT of those when i was a kid, monster especially. saw them on that tour in fact!
but i checked with my fellating lover and she says the later stuff is mostly not good or worth the effort, it's the IRS years (murmur-document) or bust

Strongly agree. I had that same feeling that Ryan had, for me after the news came out that they had stopped. Three decades, huge hits in the gloryhole era and they already had some history going on then. The last couple of records not of such a high standard anymore but there are some good songs to be found. The last two would be completely new material for me, I'm getting Accelerate

That's nice one
This song hits me in the heart, it's a grieving song for me. It's in the movie vanilla sky but I haven't seen the whole movie just bits of it
