Cool stuff, it's a shame the quality is really bad though (and for the record, Terrorizer > ).

Also, this was before Pete ever used double bass, which is :interessant: .

cool! thanks for posting!

I remember someone telling me Pete used to practise songs from Kreator with 1 kickdrum, and getting that up to the right speed, before he started playing double.

Yes, and he had to learn it in only 2 months.

Mike Browning probably helped him a bit with the technique.

I really doubt that. Pete replaced Dwayne Hartsell. Mike was allready out of the picture by then. And Mike his DB playing was not something to write home to mom about....

You are very cynical, doubting our sincerity, Verbal. Let there be no doubt about the 2 months period:

In TERRORIZER I remember you used a single bass drum, in MORBID ANGEL you immediately used double bass. Was it a challenge for you to adjust? Where was your first show with MORBID ANGEL?

"Yeah it was really a challenge because before I joined MORBID ANGEL I didn't know how to play double bass. So when I joined the band on the 4th of July1988 I just found out that I really had to do some extra, extra work in order to learn some of the songs they already had written. The first album had a lot of double bass so it was a big challenge. It was just one of those challenges that you have to fight until you surpass the situation. I had like two months to learn songs with double bass like 'Blasphemy Of The Holy Ghost', 'Chapel Of Ghouls', 'Maze Of Torment'. It was such a big thing for me and I gave up several times. I felt like I couldn't do it and I quit but the guys had faith in me and motivated me. So it pretty much took a lot of fuckin' work but I did it and that's the bottom line. I believe the first show was in lummo's cowtown, Florida. I think the first song was 'Lord Of All Fevers And Plague' but in the middle of the song I stopped because it was the first show and I got so nervous that I forgot everything. We started all over again and everything went okay after that."

The Mike Browning connection is indeed a guess, but not a wild one, since, apart from having played these songs also, in the documentary Thrash till death it is stated that of the 26 bands rehearsing in that facility of garages, Morbid Angel and Nocturnus were among them.

I never got a hold of the contribution of Dwayne Hartsell, so I am open to enlightment on that factor, but the Mike Browning connection has always been there, just like Trey got his idea of ultrafast riffing from Nocturnus' Mike Davis, so why not some technique from the old drummer of these songs? I'm not talking about the speed itself but only the double bass technique. Ofcourse Pete surpassed Mike -very quickly with his talent for speed-, who lateron even got sloppy, grew a belly and was kicked out of his own band.

If you look at the time frame it could fit as well: Hatsell was in MA while Mike was in Incubus: Nocturnus started and a little later Pete came in the picture..

I just think these bands helped each other out once in while since they're practically neighbours.

@ mutilator. Dwayne played on TKC.

Mike never surpassed sloppy. It is a hard-on bearer with a lot of enthousiasm but a very mediocre drummer.

Trey was already playing at breakneck speed regardless of Mike Davies. Listen to the demos and AOD. When they met it just clicked and they inspired each other. Mainy Solo wise. (he elaborates somewhat on that subject in a old guitar mag.)

Being also a Nocturnus fanboy I have to disagree somewhat: on The key and Thresholds he holds his own compared to the insane riffage: I don't think it sounds unbalanced or mediocre compared to the superb guitarwork at all. He plays along creatively, tight and furious, but I must admit, breaks not always fluid in some time transitions and at some short moments a bit simple, but sloppy is imo way to exaggerated. He's of course no way the innovator Pete became, but don't forget he did these drums together with the s i n g i n g and he choose not to play as fast as possible which was the trend in those days. That's why he quit in the first place (his words). I think that's a valid reason, but hey, I also like slow blackmetal like early Bathory and early Samael which share a common eerie occult atmosphere that I think Mike was aiming for in the first place (also on AOD) and what Trey eventually lost.

Regardless I'm not sure of, because I also recall reading it in an interview but I don't remember which one..furthermore I think the riffage on AOD is nowhere near as fast as it would become later. The Thy Kingdom come demo is hard for me to check because of the low budget recording and the single is indeed faster played, but I mean the ultrafast riffing like the riff on Standing in blood at 1.47.

'solo wise' actually makes me go  because their solo styles differ greatly: if you play Mike Davis' solo's slowly you'll get melodic leads within scales like a story, while Trey plays insanely hystrical and as we all know without scales..maybe some technique to make pinched harmonics/weird sounds but more aspects solo wise I can't imagine. Can you elaborate a bit on this matter?

I agree, feel like playing and signing did not quite succeed at the same time. Drumming is a bit sloppy and the signing is too simple even the voice is quite good.

But I still like Nocturnus.

Isn't there an mp3 of Trey drooling over Pete's blasts? I may still have it (I'll continue to search) but I recall Trey saying something along the lines of "I've never heard THAT before! It's all Danananana...INSANE!" and so on.

Point being: Trey got it. He understood what Pete was getting it and now we have...well, you know :thingy:

I read in the book about death metal -with the croshair on the cover- that Dave and Trey encouraged Pete, by letting him hear an over-the-top programmed drumcomputer, tricking Pete by telling him that this is the speed drummers drum nowadays..

..and when they returned home they would find Pete passed out in a puddle of his own sweat, waking him up and him being eager rightaway to get back behind the drums to practice his doublebassdrumming. :fonz:

That clip of Trey is from a 1986 rehearsal with Mike Browning on drums, not Pete. It's after they play "Reanimator's Mutilations," which became an Incubus song after Sterling and Mike left MA.

Au contraire to many opinions on this board, I think Mike Browning´s performance isn´t so sloppy and, at least on the records, very adequate and creative.

Speed, however, is not his thing, so complimenting Mike on his blasts seems very weird.

A drummer which I do find inadequate and actually falling behind is Paul from Cannibal Corpse.

Thats because he's rubbish. But to say he's falling behind isnt right either because he was never ahead.

I meant compared to his fellow bandmember in CC, not other drummers. I don´t believe in a (speed)competition between drummers, but there must be some balance within a band between the members.

In that first new song it sounds to me the Paul just barebly keeps up with the rest of the band or even falls behind. Combined with his backproblems, I´d say his days are numbered.

It wouldn't be Cannibal Corpse without Paul's signature drumming. It may be simplistic but without it Cannibal Corpse wouldn't sound like Cannibal Corpse. Yeah it's not mind-blowing or anything but it adds to the groove that corpse are able to maintain throughout all their albums. I'm not huge on the newer albums but I enjoy them to an extent and if not for Paul they would sound like any other generic tech death metal band. And corpse are definitely not generic, in my opinion.

That being said first four albums > the rest

His ´signature drumming´ is just poor flaw. The core of the band is Alex Webster with the 2 guitarplayers.
