I also liked the playing of that Irish kid who got call from David when auditing. He doesn't here anymore, I think.

No, I'm talking about Gene, I like his vocals on Edict of the Antichrist Elect waaay more than any Angel Corpse vocals. And I don't think he will have a problem with playing MA's stuff on bass. :redneck:

Thanks for saying so, but even though i think i could have played the stuff well enough i don't think playing in ma would have suited me, which is why i didnt audition. I'm happy doing what im doing :) to join a band like ma youd need to be able to drop everything else which id never do.

Everybody at MABB pushed Vamphy/Void at the time of the auditions. It would've blackened MA sound methinks :grim:

Maybe there should be some joinage with the Mike Browning and Richard Brunelle project. Add Chief Spires/ Ross Dolan/ Jon Vesano/ Steve Tucker on bass and vox and a new MorbidAngel is born ;)

MA without Trey is no Morbid Angel

Aside from his lack of stage presence and use of a bandana, what is wrong with Destructor?

Technically he's not bad, I just find him extremely lame.

His solo's are also very lame.
MA without Trey is no Morbid downward ascending thing
Since Trey does little more nowadays then rehash old shit instead of putting out really new stuff, it's easy to replace him: just reverse the riffs he hasn't already reversed himself, add arrangements and there ya go! :thingy:

His solos are pretty dull and unimaginative, IMO. It seems like every one has to have a tired, boring sweep arpeggio tucked in there somewhere. Also, his melodic style of soloing doesn't fit with any of the old songs at all from the live stuff I've seen.

Morbid Angel should build a time machine, go back to right after Nocturnus - "The Key" was recorded, kidnap Mike Davis and bring him back to the future to play in Morbid Angel. Maybe they could borrow the same time machine Mike Browning used to go back in time and shoot baby jesus.

People could also accuse Trey of doing some weird dive bomb/massive tremolo attack in every solo, too! I think Destructor's more melodic style forms a good contrast to Trey's more chaotic style.

kinda reminiscent of the whole king/hanneman dynamic.

thor's certainly not my favorite but they could do a whole lot worse.

I understand what you mean, but at least with Trey there's a little bit of uncertainty in what you're going to get, whether it's some unhinged tremelo work or weird melodic tapping or whatever. Destructhor's solos all sound like "I read an Yngwie Malmsteen article on harmonic minor soloing in Guitar World back in the gloryhole era " to me. "Blades for Baal" is honestly one of the best songs on the new CD, but that solo is so fucking lame and predictable that it's sad. I'm especially talking about the ultra-weak shit from 3:30 and onwards... any death metal guitarist should be ashamed to put that on an album.

It's all a matter of opinion anyway. My personal favorite is Azagthoth/Brunelle. Both had chaotic styles that were complimentary, and you could tell who was who.

True, but not completely predictable and pedestrian like Destructhor's.

Man, I wish Erik and crew would get together someday and do a final version of that unreleased Ripping Corpse album. What an amazing loss that it never got completely recorded. :(

Erik plays exactly the same kind of harmonic minor phrasing in every solo he does. His solos is much more of quality on the records.

I'd love to see Tony Norman come back, actually. He could do the more melodic Rutan stuff really well, but when it came to the older songs, he could do the more chaotic stuff a la Brunelle as well. I'm a big fan of Rutan's playing, but when it came to live versions of the solos from the first couple of records, I much preferred Tony's interpretations. They felt much more true to the spirit of the originals than any of the stuff Erik did (and I don't mean that as a knock against Rutan at all). Was hoping to hear Tony on a MA record. But then again, at the time, I didn't know that the record would be I.llud, so...

Thor's technically competent, but his solos on I.llud don't flow at all, IMO. They all sound really uninspired to me, kinda by the numbers. I think he's a rhythm guitarist who just plays leads out of necessity, rather than a hard-on bearer who is really good at both. And I hate his interpretations of Brunelle and Rutan's leads. He can riff like a splendid mate of mine, though. I saw him at one of the Milwaukee fests when Zyklon played their first US show...when they were getting levels just before going on he was just dicking around playing riffs and they were ALL really good.

Maybe he just wants to fit in. Anyway, watch Storm Detonation Live. Thor destroys there. Also, Zyklon's been doing MA-inspired music for the last 10 years or so, being that Zamoth is/was a great fan of MA. This is just a logical conclusion for Thor, I guess.

Thor as a rhythm player is awesome. I am not that fond of his leads. I agree that Tony fitted better in this respect, as he brought the Brunelle-feel back in the old songs and captured Erik his vibe in the newer ones.
