What did you expect from ILLUD?
After hearing the live verison of Nevermore, I was very psyched. I ignored all these (What I thought was) "rumours" about the album being a techno album. I expected something in the vein of Angelcorpse Of Lucifer And Lightning album. I had the feeling that this album would be a total Covenant/Domination kind of album.

Compact songs with heretic type riffing sounding angry/dark. For the techno stuff i hoped fore agressive riffing like stricken arise mixed with over the top techno drums. I really was excited and looking forward to it.

Re: What did you expect from ILLUD?
Even before hearing Nevermore I was expecting a mediocre album. With every dose of new material my fears were more and more intesne... after hearing the samples I was sure this album is going to such. When I finally hear it, it doesn't seem that bad as I though.... still I believe it to be mediocre, but need to give it more listens to be sure.
Silently, I had hopes hopes for continuation of Gateways, avalanche of massive riffage, plenty ultimate soloing and some cool Trey wocals - but this was impossible to happen, and it didn't

Re: What did you expect from ILLUD?
To be honest, I wasn't expecting much from this album, even the first time it was announced before being delayed again and again ! I just hoped it would be a classic album with classic Morbid Angel songs and lots of Trey's solo and so on...David being back in the band wasn't good news for me and his performances on stage since his return didn't convince me at all and I thought the new album would just follow domination's mundane path, album I like the least !
Then, when I heard nevermore for the first time live around 2008, I started to be anxious about the album: I founded this song pretty good, but it sounded like a B-side song from heretic sessions and the album would be a sub-heretic ! 5 years to get a new song that wasn't sounding new at all nor breaking boundaries !Thoughts confirmed when I heard existo this year !
In a way, I was prepared to be disappointed by Illud, especially when the songs titles were revealed.
Now I have to say after several listenings that this album is not that bad, as some have said on other topics, it's really catchy and I can't get my head rid of the songs ! Half of the album is pretty good, not excellent but good enough to become classic songs: I like the death-metal songs, and shame on me but I kinda like i am morbid and destructos vs earth. But I really can't get into intro, too extreme, radikult and mea culpa. And the weakest point of the whole album is the vocals imo !!

Long time lurker, first time poster
When I first heard about the electronic/industrial/techno elements that were going to be on the album I figured it was just going to be a few seperate/interlude type tunes like Trooper scattered amongst the Death Metal ones, didn't think they would be actual full songs with vocals
, and when Nevermore surfaced a few years back I genuinely liked it, thought it was a nice continuation of the heretic style and that the rest of the album would follow suit.

For me, Mea Culpa is the best of the tehcno infused/inspired songs. I feel it's had the perfect blend of styles, while still being fruital and off the wall. Too Extreme and Destructos just drone on too long with too many dead & soft spots. Plus the songs titles are as goofy as can be.

Re: What did you expect from ILLUD?
after all the techno talk and hearing Nevermore, i was expecting:
* Nevermore styled (standard) MA death metal.
* techno tracks on their own (ala the synth and piano tracks on past albums)
* maybe some normal MA death metal that had some techno synths buried in the mix, and maybe with some gabba kick, but not like how it turned out

Re: What did you expect from ILLUD?
For a long time, mainly based on the type of pictures that started going up on the MA website along with some of the backgrounds on Trey's MySpace I felt they were going to go back towards a Formulas type feel and sound. Long playing songs, hymns to the Ancient Ones. I actually though the may, or would it have been accurate to attribute the lyrics really to Steve, anyway, I thought he may have gone more towards the Vedas with some of the lyrics. It seemed that Vadimon's artwork was in the style of the ancient Hindu deities, with some Sumerian/Persian throwbacks.
I did not expect at all what we have been given, this is true. But the way that F- H were going, I felt that was the strain it was going to continue to progress in. I admit I was worried about David's return, not anything against him, but mainly with how the lyrical change would be. I mean literally you went from night and day to fire and ice, so to speak. I did not , and still don't which is cool, understand why Steve left and David returned to begin with but that is all past and not relevant for 2011 anyway.
Personally I still hope to see a sound reminiscent of Formulas lyrical content, the brutality of a 3 piece that Heretic gave me, and the sluggishness of the Gateways sound. Heretic was recorded as a 3 piece if memory serves correctly and I want to say this is the only album that was recorded as a 3 piece.
