you can accuse linux of being a UNIX ripoff, because that's precisely what it was modeled to be (it is a 'unix-like' operating system). OSX on the other hand is not a UNIX ripoff, it is an actual certified UNIX operating system. and, unlike linux, it's actually usable by people who don't have CS degrees.

I don't know when the last time you used Linux was, but it's hardly universally geek-required anymore. Go ahead and pop a current Ubuntu distribution disc into a system and poke around.

I have to agree the plain old Ubuntu distro is fairly easy to use (way more friendly than OSX) and is compatible with most devices out of the box, so long as you don't move out of its comfort zone hardware wise.



Still the zero performance gains over w7 and reduced palette of programs is a huge turnoff.

hardware compatibility has always been and always will be a dealbreaker type issue with linux (i'll grant that they've probably made a lot of progress on this issue over the last 10 or so years, but my understanding is that it's still hit-or-miss even with ubuntu, let alone any of the other major distros) and the fact that it offers me absolutely zero practical advantage over winxp/osx kinda renders the whole ordeal moot.

With hardware compatibility, nothing even touches Windows. OS-X is at the bottom of that pole.

All I can say is my computer illiterate mother was able to do more on a computer with ubuntu for the first time without asking for help than on a modern Imac with osx. Bear in mind that I am no fanboy for linux in the least.

and i must say ubuntu works fine BUT.. on laptops it can be really enoying ! there are still several

driver problems ... os doesnt hit my taste .. win7 actually is nice and comfortable and i use it in general

beside ubuntu

Win7 has been my OS of choice since its beta phase.

I don't know what version of windows I have.

yeah i guess osx hardware compatibility sucks if you're trying to install it on top of your unsupported dell hardware



or do you mean USB drives and wireless dongles and shit. in which case, linux probably doesn't support it without having to troubleshoot it for 6 hours, involving kernel-level patches, managing half a dozen package dependencies, and then further manually compiling an installation executable which might just work (but probably not).

These things were true of Linux about 5 years ago. In the last few years of Ubuntu, I've not had a single problem mounting flash drives, running game controllers, nor installing various peripherals.



As for OS-X, I'm referring to its extremely limited set of hardware in which it can run on. I can install Windows and Linux (and many hobbyist OSes) on my "unsupported Dell hardware" or most anything x86 under the sun.
