I used to zoom out of my apartment/street all the way out of the galaxy in Celestia all the time. :redneck: There are only a few galaxy models in Celestia though, this is neat.

Watching the earth rotate from that point of view is quite neat. I recall reading all the positions and movement of satellites, planets and stars in Celestia are real-time and to scale. You can even speed it up for fun.



I tried speeding it up a shitload and then zooming out of the galaxy but I couldn't notice any galaxies moving apart from each other. :redneck: Maybe they've added that in a newer version.

Great post.



Solar system diagrams are really misleading. I read that if drawn to scale, with the sun the size of a pin prick, pluto would be a microscopic dot 500 meters away.

On a related note, the typical image of the atom is also very misleading in very much the same way(big cluster with electrons orbiting quite closely to it(. If a nucleus was the size of a dust spec, the nearest electron would be orbiting around it as far as the radius of an American football stadium.
