Attempting ventriloquism on the radio - hilarious

Post by Paste Human »

The idea of failing at ventriloquism on the radio is funny in itself, and the fact that it's Norm Macdonald with his holocaust denying puppet makes it perfect (full disclosure: I'm a junkie for Norm's radio/Conan interviews).

Skip to the 4:00 minutes for the puppet act, but the entire interview is golden. Some of the strangest comedy I've ever heard.

I realize this will probably never get any responses, but listening to it again with the back history in mind has me laughing my ass off: Norm unprecedentedly got fired from SNL mid-season for his OJ Simpson jokes that he refused to stop telling (He also famously punched later Simpsons writer Ian Maxtone-Grahm in the face for telling him to stop smoking).

While that was happening he lost all his wealth gambling several times, and got tied up in the mafia because of it. He was gambling in underground casinos (that's why he was never around for the SNL curtain call) and the movie "Rounders" was partially based on his style of poker.

He became friends with Artie Langue and introduced him to Howard Stern, who later made him his sidekick because of it. When Norm would go on talk shows he would lie in the pre-interview and then tell completely different stories on air to make the segment entirely spontaneous. That's why they're so jarring.

The dude quietly became the Andy Kaufman of our time, and no one noticed.

It's funny because he just doesn't care. He's obviously brilliant but he just doesn't give a shit. He used to be a regular correspondent on the Denis Miller Show but he often didn't even answer the phone when they called him, so he was cut off. Sam Simon (Simpsons producer with more money than god) goes into this further if you care to dig up the interviews.
