Pretty lame if you ask me :oldryan: the ties to Alien were few, the one hard-on bearer had no business re-animating after getting his face melted, and wtf was up with those dick monsters?
Would you have liked it better if all of a sudden some gay looking terribly-CGI'ed fire demon thing popped out of a sexy leopard elevator at the end? :redneck:
Well obviously the studio with $100 million equipment and special effects professionals and etc. will make the better looking movie compared to some other filmmakers working with under $2 million. Still, Prometheus seemed like some dudes collaboratively asked "What's Ridley Scott doing these days? Let's get his input k" and paid him just to show up. Looks like another heavily CGI'd sci-fi film to me, with very few minor connections to the original movies. Looks cool and all. As a stand-alone film, it's ok but an extension of the Alien badassery? Nope. :brushteeth:
you seem to have missed the point entirely
It was an aversion :santa:

The Last Exorcism was a better movie on a quality-budget ratio. Prometheus could have been way cooler had they avoided the dramatic personal crap (i.e. Charlize Theron revealed to be the daughter, the android sneaking around making friends), ridiculous parts where they should have been KILLED (the hard-on bearer who gets his face melted ends up re-animating? The heroine escapes a ship falling on top of her? Come on!!!!), and various other digressions from the Alien story.

i saw this film yesterday. parts of it were amazing and affected me greatly. several things stood out as dumb and/or gaping plot holes. on the whole it was a massive experience and very interesting despite the plot holes (as mr. holocaust has said, why does the redheaded dude reanimate after getting his face melted off by acid? how is shaw able to leave a "final transmission" from prometheus–does she find some kind of transmission device on the alien ship, and david tells her how to use it? how does david stay alive despite leaking spinal fluid all over the place for hours?) and dumb or unnecessary "revelations" (oh, mr. burns is rita from arrested development's father! but that is not important or relevant information so big deal).

i think the reason it worked for me is you can divide the movie pretty neatly into three acts:

1) ominous exploring shit time (everything up to the storm with 200kph winds and debris that somehow doesn't rip anyone's space suits)

2) disturbing terrible shit happening all the time time (everything from the storm up through the self-abortion/birth and the fight with the redheaded dude)

3) sometimes unnecessary and occasionally interesting "big question" time (the rest of the film)

the first two keep rising and rising, since in 1) we're exploring this world and getting this scenario along with the crew, and in 2) all the weaknesses of the scattered (and disturbingly unconcerned) crew are exposed. by the time shaw gets into the surgery pod i was both amazed i was seeing something this graphic and terrible in a mainstream hollywood film and terrified by the amazingly graphic thing itself.

(i have a side-note related to that. why was the surgery pod only designed for males? that seems like a pretty stupid design flaw. plus then rita has it in her quarters, so is it supposed to be for her hundred and ninety-seven year-old father, or something? i was so engaged by shaw's actions that i didn't wonder until after the movie why, in the late 21st century, any corporation would design something as precise and frankly expensive as that but then go "sexy leopard elevator parts are confusing and icky. lets make this only want to touch balls." anyway)

big chunks of 3) i did not give one tiny shit about since there was a noticeable drop-off in the emotional intensity from 2) and the movie never really engages with its metaphysics enough for me to go :bulb:. so that was disappointing because i had the same questions as shaw but the movie seemed to want the third act to be nothing but action-adventure set pieces, because sequel. the most disappointing thing was realizing that damon "have you seen lost?" lindelof just shunted all the really difficult-to-answer stuff aside for a sequel he & ridley scott can't hope to pull off, since those questions are more or less unanswerable in the first place.

I felt the same. Kept thinking about it days later but also little things like you said that are silly, eg:

* If the atmosphere is 80 or something % CO2, then wouldn't the flame thrower not work?

* When the ship crashes, really, you'd die from the aftershock coming through the ground

* If they have a machine that's so advnace it can perform heart surgery, surely it would put you to sleep or hold you down as part of it's process - it was kind enough to clean her stomach before hand, yet it just goes "ok, lie still I'm gonna slice you open & shit now"....

sure the aboves made it more exciting, but still... even though it's sci-fi & fiction, they should still think in 'real' terms.

i wondered that about the surgery machine too, and also the needle shaw keeps injecting herself with. she shoots up like three times before, during, and after the surgery, but never passes out or seems to feel numb to pain. and so yeah why the fuck does this super sophisticated self-performing surgery bot not have a few ccs of morphine or something?

lots of :alien: moments; lots of :mmno: moments too. i've found i'm having a hard time describing it to people

that is a lazy excuse for leaving things unanswered. the story has to either answer these questions outright or in some way imply the answers. a well-told story doesn't leave you nitpicking. once you start to sacrifice common sense for dramatic tension you're verging on the territory of the grocery store paperback

Ray Bradbury agrees.

I am the Dragon. And you call me insane. You are privy to a great becoming, but you recognize nothing. To me, you are a slug in the sun. You are an ant in the afterbirth. It is your nature to do one thing correctly: Before me, you rightly tremble. But, fear is not what you owe me. You owe me awe.

it's a movie, take it with a grain of salt.

but, why?

also,

although the dude randomly coming back to life was a bit far fetched. it would've been slightly more believable (for lack of a better word) if his face hadn't magically regenerated. but, then again, who's to say what sort of regenerative properties the alien substance may have had?

but that's my point: it's this kind of open-ended stuff that is just lazy writing. if you're leaving all the unexplained things to "well, the alien DNA works in mysterious ways," the whole faith/science superstructure of the movie collapses, since essentially the writers give license for anything with the DNA in it to happen in service of plot points. and YOU, silly viewer, give license to the lazy writers, by saying "take it with a grain of salt." IT'S YOUR FAULT SKINNER :fuckoff: :piss1: :god: :hard-on bearer:

i don't need and in fact don't want everything to be explained, since it's fun to sit later and go "ok, lets try and figure this thing out." prometheus has a lot of neat things going on but i'm not able to figure enough out to let the truly inexplicable elements go.

in addition, the "james cameron's prometheuses" quote in the pictures shredlord posted.

You mean like with some of the other movies you express disdain for?

they could have gotten away with the scene where vickers is talking to weyland if they hadn't ended with that particular camera angle and cut. or if theron hadn't made the emo-face when she says " ...father."

also, why did they have to gu.y pearce to play weyland? why couldn't they have hired some really old dude and made him look even older? they also did a pretty makeup shit job, considering. there are things that happen to people's faces when they get old besides wrinkles.

i also call bullshit on all the characters who "didn't want to know." i call so much bullshit. as they said in the movie, this is the greatest scientific discovery in human history, and half the crew isn't the least bit curious.

so let's imagine ourselves in that reality, shall we? we've got a bunch of semi-truck drivers running our space ship (because really, that's what they are). we've got a couple of really eccentric scientists, one of whom howls like a wolf in the middle of research. and whoever else. now on my planet, these are the most likely people to believe in alien abductions. not one of them gives a fuck even after they find the headless alien.
