Yes, this is what Vista should have been. But, for the record, Vista does not suck. It had severe problems at launch and sure sucked a fat nut, but right about now, I have great performance and no problems with my Vista Home Premium x64 system. Windows 7 should be a nice step up from what people raved about the beta.

i just don't like vista, my system works perfectly well xp



if i really wanted all the eye candy and bloat vista has, there are several applications which can do the same things on xp and tie up my memory



honestly, i'd use a distro of linux instead of windows in general, if one didn't need to have some 'work-around' technique (emulation/virtual pc) to play most games

Is Windows 7 going to be a big change?

There's a few things that I just wonder...how the fuck did it take them this long to think of this? Like, for instance, dragging windows to the side of the screen to make them half width so that you can compare them easier, instead of having to manually resize them. I still won't be using Internet Explorer 8. I don't give a flying fuck what they add. IE has been way too gay for way too long to give it a chance now.

That's because there is nothing wrong with it. Windows decided that they need to compete against the ease of mac use by creating a platform that wildly overburdens the processor with hyper-useless shit.

Ive been using 7 for awhile now. Sure the menu thing Aaron said was kinda cool but it gets to be a bitch sometimes. The menu undergoes HONEY IVE JUST MADE MY PORN gay man's telescope FUCKING GINORMIC! Other than that I like it.Still not as cool as XP though. I want to revert but I am toooooooooo lazy...

If you want to talk about hyper-useless shit then strip yourself of the GUI altogether and go CLI. Otherwise, why knock someone's wont for eye candy and graphical usability? Your happy medium between performance and shine is not necessarily the next person's.

I spent a long time in FreeBSD CLI using bash2. I used naim (an ncurses AIM client) for IM and lynx for web.

Windows 7 Ultimate RC1 x64 (Build 7100) installed last night. I backed up my data and settings then did an in-place upgrade. I had a couple configuration quirks but otherwise everything is great. I am also noticing a performance increase, which is in line with what they were saying about performance streamlining. For the record, I'm running it on a Dell Studio 1537 notebook with a Core 2 Duo T6400 2GHz dual core CPU, 4GB DDR2-RAM, and on board Intel x45 graphics.



I will likely buy a license when the evaluation period becomes annoying next March. (It expires July 2010 but will shut down every two hours in March.)

running a pre-release OS for a full year seems like a really bad idea, why not at least wait for the the RTM build?

The RC isn't so scary after the beta proved relatively stable. I did my in place upgrade and I'm loving it!

i'd like to give it a try, but owning only one computer makes me a bit wary of testing out something of this nature. plus, my current windows partition is smaller than the minimum required to install 7

i don't bother with backing up anything windows, i don't produce any sort of data there so there's not much need. i use it for final fantasy online and occasionally IE for stuff that requires it, and nothing else. my osx partition is backed up on a daily basis though

Fuck ze OS-X. If Im going to dual boot anything with Windows, its going to be Linux.

for me, there's just no practical reason to use linux. i've messed around with a few distros in the past, and the benefits just weren't worth the hassles of dealing with sprawling package dependencies just to install a single application, hardware support issues, etc. i'll grant that it seems to have come a long way in recent years with regard to usability (better package managers) and better driver/hardware support, but i can already accomplish everything i need to between the two operating systems i already use (including having a unix CLI to fuck around with, when the urge strikes). it's just sorta redundant i guess.

I don't feel the need to go back to windows, I'd install it if it was cheaper and more cooperative with regards to dualbooting.
