But is it my fault there isn't that much good death metal out there these days? Show me something good and I'll give it a listen. One can only listen to the old albums for so much. I USED to say Morbid Angel was my favorite but I've heard them enough, you know what I'm saying?

I went through a phase a handful of years ago where i completely quit listening to metal, it was for a good 6 months or so. That's when I thought "well I'm getting old", but then I snapped out of it and started hailing satan again

Though I will say my music taste now is probably the most diverse its ever been in my life

also believing metal hasn't evolved over the last two decades
are their bands that straight up worship older acts? yeah, obviously.
but there has been a shit load of innovation as well.
y'all just gave up on looking for new music and are content with what you grew up with.

in defense of the goomers, the signal to noise ratio has become more of a problem. there's no shortage of bands that sound the same these days. it's a sea of breakdowns, 8 string guitars, 300bpm, old school dm worship, etc etc etc

i think there's plenty of great modern metal but i had to really dig around to find things that were different/interesting to me

i don't know if i agree on recent innovations in metal, i don't think there's been any real innovation in metal for awhile

most everything is stale, it just stands out to me in metal the most since that is the genre i have the strongest familiarity with and emotional investment into. stale can still be enjoyable to listen to; i am not saying nobody should enjoy listening to new stuff, that's really none of my business. but i think it's a mistake to say any of it's doing anything new or interesting. for my part, i adore the last couple deathspell records in spite of the fact that they are very consciously a step back in form. so i'm as much a part of the problem as anyone else i guess

metal stopped evolving a long time ago and fell into the same pattern of arbitrary hybridization that every other genre has. that isn't strictly bad in a vacuum and obviously it can produce good or enjoyable music, but when that's the only game left in town besides straight-up reproduction, i think it speaks to a larger problem of our collective imagination being severely inhibited. and i think to a lesser degree, probably indicative that we've collectively exhausted the larger part of what can be done with conventional western musical approaches

there has been precisely one pathbreaking new metal album, and that's the new kayo dot (and i presume most people here would probably scoff at calling it metal at all)

Hmm, I listen to a good deal of non-metal already, so this isn't a problem for me, really. One day I'd be hooked to a Bell Witch album, the next day it'd be something from Bohren & Der Club of Gore, and then it'd be Ulver's Industrial noir epic Perdition City, or Toby Driver's dark and dreary doom ballads, etc. A lot of good music has been coming out, and will continue to do so. Whether it fits your description of 'interesting' is a separate matter, I guess.
As for Kayo Dot, they are yet to miss, even if that new album's an extremely painful listen.

in case it wasn't obvious, most of what i listen to also is not metal and that has been true for a long, long time. so from the standpoint of my own entertainment or whatever i don't really *need* metal to do or be anything. it is mostly just a shame to see such a unique and potent form of expression reduced to imitating itself, it is never a good thing when a movement's primary animating principle becomes nostalgia

That's pretty much where I am right now in terms of my current music choices. More often than not, balearic-style electro/chillout music is what I usually listen to nowadays and it's the genre whose latest releases I'm mostly looking forward to. Sometimes I'd throw in some 80s British new wave music (yes I am feeling the aging) and that's pretty much my playlist at the workplace or in the car. When I feel like listening to metal, it's almost always...Deicide, Deeds of Flesh, Emperor...basically the classics but never any of the new bands although I rarely listen to these at the workplace or while driving. These days, I mostly just listen to metal during a lazy day at home.

You know how your parents would refuse to listen to anything but stuff like The Carpenters, The Grateful Dead or Kiss? Yeah, I would say I am at that stage now for my generation.

Would've happened by now but it didn't. I still find new underground bands that I like, classics I missed and I have not grown tired of the heavy shit I grew up on. I put on some classic Nile the other day and still got goosebumps. I got really excited to hear a Saxon album I totally skipped for the first time.

The best newer bands have low social media presence/marketing efforts IME. Tons of soulless junk out there for sure but like with anything else the diamonds are there for those who look.

20+ years ago we still had to sort through a ton of lame mallcore to find good stuff too. History is viewed through rose-tinted glasses.
