Any thoughts on whether this game is worth it? It's supposed to be Obsidian's answer to Elder Scrolls.

i watched this and it didn't look very interesting


it's sitting at a 'very positive' on steam though, the reviews there are kind of mixed

if i had the time, i would play this thing

I just don't care for video games anymore. If I get wild hair up my ass it's to play something from the late gloryhole era or early 2000s and I just find an emulator/rom that work for it.

I just reached level 8 and am moving on to the second map area, playing as a ranger with arquebus and dual pistols. So far so good...it's OK - nothing groundbreaking but it's not boring either although part of my admiration for this game is the fact that I loved the two Pillars of Eternity games.

It's Skyrim/Oblivion but far less grandiose and more linear e.g. you're not that motivated to pick a random direction and just go and see whatever you may find or encounter in said direction, which is something Oblivion really excelled in. You are limited to be able to interact to only key items in the environment and not like in Skyrim/Oblivion where you can pick up (and throw) every plate, goblet or fruit you see on the table. Also, every NPC refers to you as 'them' even though you picked 'he/him' in the pronouns selection part (which you can happily turn off, if that bothers you).

That's exactly what happened to Dragon Age Veilguard - 'very positive' reviews in the first few weeks. Look where that slop of a game is right now.

Just play Disco Elysium.

I did and it was incredibly boring, so I stopped playing it midway.

I don't even play CRPGs, and this was the best written game I've played in years. Never thought I'd get into it, and it sure did take a while, but I was fully immersed after a few hours. It's now one of my all-timers.

Oh well.

thinking of downloading this, its on the game pass but doesnt really attract me at all

I just finished the game.

What I like about it: Ranger class is quite fun. I basically played the entire game like an FPS, not really taking note of the RPG elements and the dialog. Interface and inventory is a breeze to use though it can be intimidating at the start. Wherever you are, you can directly put items in your camp stash if your inventory is getting heavy. Item upgrades and crafting is straightforward and easy to use. If you like a particular unique item, you can upgrade it all the way up to the max Legendary+3. Each unique item has 2 upgrade paths to choose from. You can respec your character (stats, skills) for a price. Some dungeons do feel like Skyrim/Oblivion in terms of layout and level design, which is nice. You can save anywhere as long you're not in combat.

What I don't like about it: As someone who played the first 2 Pillars of Eternity games, story is ehhh. NPCs are boring none of them are memorable. Game dialog makes heavy use of they/them pronouns for quest NPCs to the point that it's sometimes confusing to determine if the questgiver is referring to one or more individuals when explaining quest details. Only 3 classes (Fighter, Ranger, Wizard) as opposed to the many classes from the first 2 PoE games (and no Cipher - I really wanted to play as one in Avowed). Combat is so-so...I supposed it's fun as a ranger with a gun because you can play it like a mindless FPS ala Serious Sam. Can't speak for the other class but I imagine it won't be as fun. Also, the entire game is short and you'd probably finish it in a week or so - the bulk of your time will be spent on side quests (of course, you can always skip any of those) as it's the only way to get some unique items.

It's an average game at best but it can be a good pastime. I wasn't expecting much from it to be honest but I didn't find it boring - enough that I finished the game. Would I play it again? Probably not anytime soon. I will say, however, that I like this a whole lot better than Starfield.
