The other day, YouTube shorts suggested to me a video someone filming the engine of an old car and suddenly a little mouse comes out of the radiator cap.

shorts and reels and other similar services are high-potency addiction machines and they are very bad for you. they are a tool for tech companies and their clients, whoever they may be, to invade your your interior life and colonize your brain. for whatever unstated and unknowable purpose they deem fit. obviously this is true of social media more broadly, but it is most obvious and evident in the video delivery channels. but at peak effectiveness, the result is a sort of displacement of its subjects' very humanity, being slowly replaced by an emergent pseudo-consciousness of the technology itself.

i was on the train back in november sitting next to a woman who was transfixed on a feed of this stuff for the entire 45 minute ride, as near to unblinking as possible, and it is actually kind of horrifying to look at

(of course characterizing it as an extension of the technology itself is kinda suspect since the technology is just a mediator here, but its probably better than invoking the typical nebulous They who direct it)

I never got into these shits, it’s all just mindless drivel. i usually skip over them if im on YouTube. Also one of the reasons i refuse to ever use TikTok or anything like it - if someone sends me a TikTok link I just lie and say I watched it.

i am shameless addicted to short form media, i use tiktok, reels, and sometimes youtube shorts. my algorithm is mostly stuff i like though, i rarely see rage bait or things like that. i see lots of guitar, science, and funny videos. you gotta watch out for what the algorithm is feeding you, you can shape it into things you like but rage bait will sneak in there and they know you'll hate watch it

i really enjoy tiktok despite all the reasons it's horrible. it's interesting to me to get a peek into the lives of younger people and just general what people are up to these days. the constant new teenage slang is fun to me, it's so absurd on god for real for real

i want to start a channel that reacts to podcasts. but in a way thats analogous to an unboxing video. that is, i will avoid any commentary on the content of the podcast, and instead focus exclusively on things like the thumbnail, video length, number and placement of ads, upload date/time, etc
