what are your thoughts on these

i for one quite liked them

well, there have been a great many things that have happened in the past which i think back on fondly

but i do not long to return to them, taken as a whole i think the old days were not very good for me

There are times I miss, and then there are times I wish would never return.

i think of the time between 2006-2010 (ages 16-20) a lot. it was a time in my life where everything was very good. after 2011 life just started to become more challenging every year and it seemed like bad things kept happening more frequently. maybe that's just part of becoming an adult and leaving home. but home also continued to get worse even though i wasn't there

i absolutely miss some old times

I'd probably some how make even worse choices if given the ability to do it all over again.

Absolutely this

Most if it I think back and cringe at, apparently this is a sign of growth but who knows.

Dont get me wrong a lot of good, even great memories in there too.

hmm, most of the bad stuff was all quite overdetermined. path dependence was the name of the game from a very young age!

it was admittedly nice being entirely unconcerned with mortality and decline though, that part of youth was quite nice. of course i didn't appreciate it at the time, but what can you do

I'm glad that I'm old enough to have a full experience of pre-internet life and yet young anough to be able to savour having it as a resource now (particularly musically).

I think if you've grown up knowing only the internet then you're missing something, in a way, in terms of how independent your mind used to have to be when coming up with solutions for things. I suspect the way it's revolutionised information exchange is going to turn out to have been the biggest social upheaval in human history so far; the next will be either some form of engineered immortality (or at least very, very long life) or extraterrestrial Contact...perhaps also post-scarcity replicator-type technology.

yeah i think it is very difficult to appreciate how dramatic the impact of networked communications has really been, especially against the backdrop of the triumph of global capitalism. most of us are too enmeshed in it to really apprehend all the ways in which its reshaping human consciousness. that much has become overwhelmingly clear as i have pulled back a bit this year and weaned myself off of a lot of Being Online, and i also grew up in the pre-internet age!

There were times growing up that I was very fond of. But then things like high school I have zero positive feelings for - some people I know long for those days… I don’t get it.

My late teens / early 20s were good times, I was paving my own path but still had a degree of freedom. Living on my own and broke but somehow still forging along and able to do things outside of work / school. I kind of lived
This way for a long time until my wife and I got married and bought a house in ‘17/‘18. It wasn’t until 2020 and all the shit that happened after that I really felt myself change as a person. I like to think that I am less naive and wiser than I was even only 5 years ago - cause I’m definitely not the same person.

Also, I think most of us are at the age where we were all on the cusp of the internet and so kind of found ourselves between worlds when it started to take off and become more of a cultural thing. - I mean I had the internet when I was young in the gloryhole era but it was different. Same with cell phones - I had one of those nokia bricks at one point but barely used it. It always kind of blows my mind that kids now will never know a time without it as they’re practical given tablets at birth.

People were always stupid. The internet has just thrown it into sharp relief.

certainly true that there's an element of 'we are just more aware of it now', but i think it also quite dramatically intensifies, reshapes and - most importantly - in new and poorly understood fashions, instrumentalizes the nature of our stupidity.

yeah, it's not that there weren't stupid people before. previously they were much more isolated and thus less willing to share their idiotic views as they would be openly ridiculed. now though? lol.
