I think it is the dumbest trend Ive seen in recent years

it is hilariously american and seems very dumb. i don't think there's much practical utility to it, strikes me as more of a lifestyle branding endeavor, 'look at how manly i am on account of the food i eat, also i will die of colon cancer at 45'

i have mostly cut out meat from my daily diet, just some lean protein with dinner. don't particularly feel like i'm missing out on anything and i'm the thinnest i've been in close to a decade now

It works for some people and not for others.
Really depends on where you get your meat from. And you still need to add certain vegetables and fruit to get other vitamins and minerals, and/or take supplements.

It has nothing to do with how manly you are because I also know women who tried this or are currently on it. With some good health benefits. I also have a good f.riend who had to cut it out of his diet entirely with only a bit of fish now and then to mitigate his rheumatism. As soon as he eats any meat, even pure beef or chicken, it gets worse.

Another jiu jitsu buddy has been on this diet for about 3 years now and he gets his meat from my local butcher, who has his own cows and pigs right next to his store. That is of course very luxurious that we even have such an option here. But he also works out every day and is in really good shape and health. So diet is never everything.

The above comments just proves again that people have strong opinions about anything while probably having done little or no research on the topic at all.

Have a f.riend who tried it for sometime and had to quit for undisclosed reasons. I've tried Keto for 8 months myself, and won't be going back to it because it's just not maintainable in the long run. Stick to eating less carbs, with a ton of veg on the side. Control your portions, get exercise. You should hopefully be good.

Indeed  things like these are a lot more nuanced, like everything else in life. My wife has been on a keto diet for 2 years now, but because of medical reasons. And it's really doing well for her.
I'm also cutting out bread (note: bread here is completely different from the shit you find in the US) and as much carbs as possible at the moment and try my best to stick to it. I definitely don't need to lose any weight anymore, and working on gaining muscle weight now. At 85 KG's now, with a height of 1,91m.

My experience with keto and other diets that eliminate or severely limit carbs is you have short term success. After some time everyone i have known, including myself, doing these diets tend to binge or just fall off track because they are expensive and not sustainable. Its a classic yo yo fad diet and the worst for anyone with disordered eating.

Most doctors and nutritionists are not in favor of them because carbs are a healthy part of our diets. Life is about learning to be at peace with food and doing the best we can to maintain a balanced, healthy life style.

There are a few medical conditions a keto diet can benefit but what i said applies to the vast majority of people.

That's also the big problem with diets in general. A healthy change that fits your personal metabolism should become a way of life. Not just a temporary diet. Not saying any of this is easy.

in fairness there is very much a current that is what i described (internet dumbasses that only eat raw meat and dairy for clout). i will grant that there are people with lifestyles that can mesh with an actual diet like that, which accounts for macronutrients and whatnot, and that's a different and much less silly application. the people i've known with diets like that don't really call it anything though, so i guess i never really connected those dots

and if it wasn't clear, i do not mean to suggest my diet is for everyone. it is for me though, and depending on your caloric needs and fitness objectives, it could be for you too!

fair points all around :santa:

Plant forward with a bit of protein is how most of the wotld eats. My bro and I eat that way too because its more affordable. Plus you can afford higher quality protein occasionally if you arent serving a huge amount to everyone.

I really only take issue with diets that cut out entire groups of food like gluten free for non celiac or keto for folks who dont have severe seizures.
