MABB v6.6.6

I'm looking to save costs on a lot of housework and improvements, like building shelves, cabinets, benches and even extend the backyard patio. Thinking about learning to do these things. Anyone here really good with that sort of stuff?

I grew up helping my grandfather do a lot of this. So i can handle a lot of smaller jobs around the house. Between the time, cost of tools and goods that'd go with some of those jobs I'll happily pay someone else.

You're right about the tools being expensive. I suppose if I buy them I'd have to consider if they will come in handy over the long term. Because there's only so much I'd build for my home, and after that they might not get much use, unless I make it a side-business of sorts.

Thing is though, I need a few tall book shelves, entry-way tables, built-in shelves and cabinets in the living room. So all of that could get really expensive if I buy it.

I DIY if it’s within my skill level, YouTube is a godsend when it comes to DIY. That said, there have been a few instances where I started a repair and realized after a bit that “oh shit, this is definitely a job for a professional” and made the call. Of course, there’s been many an instance too where I exclaimed “I can’t believe that worked!”

As for Tools - I don’t know if such a thing exists where you live but here we have a Tool Library which is exactly what it sounds like - you can rent those specialized tools that you’ll likely only ever use once for a small fee.

Not trying to discourage you or anything but those aren't small jobs. I have a fairly decent working knowledge of how to go about most of that, along with access to the tools for it. That's not something I'd try to tackle myself but you go ahead and do you

My wife and I do almost everything ourselves in and around the house. I've just learned to do a lot myself throughout the years. Mainly things like electrical, plumbing, roofing, bricks, woodwork, etc. Built our own closet room with steel pipe frames and wooden planks, etc. We're getting new flooring done next month and hired a company to do it, but removing current wooden floor and tiles we'll so ourselves. Just saving money where we can by DIY and some stuff can beter be left done by experienced professionals.

I run into a problem that a lot of what's in my house is really old. So it can get a little dicey when it comes to trying to diy somethings.

Wring and plumbing that is decades old :::::::::;

Also what lummo said. Internet, youtube, friends and family with experience will get you a long way.

Demo is always the easy part of any job. It's making sure you don't sard and actually finish the job that's hard

I highly recommend not diying those unless you know ehat you are doing and have access to tools. Ive messed up a lot of units learning what not to do thinking itd be simple and I don’t use power tools. Anything large and weight bearing requires skill to some degree and are not always beginner friendly. There are tons pf great tutorials now that can help with most projects its how i teach myself new skills all the time with diy/crafting. It looks like you are doing planning which is key.

Check thrift and consignment shops if the bones are good redoing wood pieces is a good way to save abd you dont need all the fancy tools you would with building it from scratch. Ive gotten some really nice pieces under 20 that just need a good sanding and painting. I find it fun redoing things. A lot of my craft friends do this and resell all the time but they have skills im guessing most here don’t.

you kind of have to decide how far you want to go with it. you could spend a few thousand on tools and supplies but it's probably not worth it to build just a few pieces of furniture and be done with it.

you could look for a community maker space or a local wood shop that allows you to use their tools for a fee, there's probably something like that in your area.

i can't do any DIY stuff. sometimes i wish i was a bit more of a technical hardware type (for beer equipment engineering) but i've never had an issue with house repairs and stuff since i have either lived in a country where labour is cheap or where rental rights are strong, so i never have to pay for repairs. if i owned my own place i might have to skill up but that's unlikely for a long time to come

i think imran should try to DIY all of his house shit using the tool library and make videos for the MABB about it

This group is doing a good job of talking me out of it so far.

I say go for it, but do some research beforehand. You can learn this stuff and do more yourself than you might think.
