smother it with healthy nourishing mulch and then plant native plants
native plants will not need continual watering the way a lawn will
they will also flower and invite pollinators and butterflies, the way a lawn won't
they can also be arranged in infinite and pleasing patterns, the way a lawn can't
kill your lawn and plant native plants where your lawn used to be
This is xeriscaping you get paid to do it in california. Use plants that require little to bo water that are native to your region.

I only know bugs not plants. Insects, spiders, worms, parasites, snakes thats what interested me never the plants or gardening
The native plants is very helpful though. Here they attract tons of lacewings (you want these guys they kill grubs and pollinate), soldier beetles, hummingbirds, butterflies, and ladybugs. Non native plants kill native environments look at the damage grass has caused serpentine grass lands here in cali. A rare case cattle help the environment.
A lot of folks forget how important attracting predators is in natural gardening. They naturally keep things in check without harming pets or kiddos.
