the gadget gets compressed crisp edges along the perimeter of the sandwich, along with a similar crisp compressed line across the diagonal of the sandwich. this cannot be replicated in a pan. it is delicious. and in addition, this compressing leads to better cheese melting. the occasional burst of melted cheese also ends up combining with and cooking into the exterior of the sandwich in a better way. you can also cook more sandwiches quicker. and they are not expensive

a toasted sandwich maker is not the same as a panini press. it gets a much better end product. it is also not expensive. and you absolutely cannot replicate the end product of a toasted sandwich maker effectively with any number of frying pans
