As someobe who works 96 hours as a caregiver some weeks (not this one) and makes just enough to lose all subsidies and help but is certainly not rich you are 100% correct.
You only want to be here if you are very poor or very wealthy.

the primary driver of this dynamic is US foreign policy, which has kept the most of the hemisphere in their 'developing' state through more than a century of fruital neocolonial rule. obviously also true for much of the rest of the world in the postwar years
