yeah i think on the whole i am more of a scotch hard-on bearer than a bourbon hard-on bearer, but i have access to the dumbest collection of the latter. buddy of mine decided to go stormy mode on bourbon a couple years ago, he's dropped $10k into his liquor cabinet over the last 18 months easy.
and yeah high west makes some very good stuff. the midwinter night's dram i got for christmas a couple years ago in particular is a favorite

i like bourbon but can't stand jim beam, i drank too much of it when i was young
but i prefer irish whiskey, then scotch
and still haven't tried much japanese or australian whiskeys

scotch is the correct way...drink it on it the rocks
japanese whisky definitely the best but also damn expensive this is more for occasions and the like
scotch is the best if you want just a quick drink to warm you up or as a night cap

especially is the case with high proof or cask strength whisky. Though funny enough, Every time I add water, I like the spirit less. Maybe I did it wrong.
