Six in hospital after party bonfire blast
Six people are in a serious condition in hospital after an explosion at a 21st birthday party near Stanthorpe in southern Queensland.
The accident happened on a private property at Sugarloaf about 8.30pm (AEST).
Firefighters say the group was sitting around a bonfire when someone threw two large drums of paint thinners onto the fire and they exploded.
Ambulance supervisor Steve Godley says the injured were taken to Stanthorpe Hospital and some were airlifted to Brisbane.
"One person with severe burns to the legs, with full thickness burns to 20 per cent of her body ... we transported her to hospital, a 17-year-old female transported to hospital," he said.
"There was also a number of people taken by private vehicle before we got there, to Stanthorpe Hospital.
"Four of those patients have been flown to Brisbane by helicopter."
Firefighters say it is unclear if the 20 and 60 litre drums had any thinners in them, but they say the fumes would have been enough to cause a major explosion.
