Venting. Since ya'll hoes are my friends.

My son was officially diagnosed with Autism today.

Having someone tell you there's something wrong with the one person you love more than anything is the fucking worst feeling ever. On the upside, I'm glad he was diagnosed at an early age. We've already made a ton of progress with the special ed class he's in currently. The doctors at this fancy hospital are recommending he gets behavorial therapy, physical therapy (he walks with his feet turned in) and occupational therapy. They also suggested he be enrolled in a full day specialized program, rather than the half day one he currently attends.

My heart is broken. It sucks having to hold back and be strong when all I really want to do right now is be an emo able-bodied chap.

Fuck.

Well I would imagine him getting help early is going to help him live a more well adjusted life later on, yes?

Also, if you don't mind going into a few details, what signs/symptoms was he showing that prompted these evals? I can't remember if you mentioned it or not a while back when you first brought up the eval stuff. Either way, it sucks but he is your child so he will grow up to be :grim: :xx: :thingy: anyways :santa:

He really is going to be fine. I know this feeling you're having, but really, really, he is going to grow up to be one cool young man and make you one damn proud mom. He's got you in his corner; he'll be okay.

Don't be afraid to let out whatever you're holding back when you get a moment alone, though. Bottling it up only makes it fester.

This and of course it's hard dealing with circumstances like this but I encourage Tara to take a proactive approach to the situation. Autism has it's shortcomings, of course but it also comes with brilliance.

autism myth vs fact

You're doing the right stuff to make sure he's taken care of, and he's got an awesome mom, so methinks he will be ok.

And it can't be that bad if he's willing to talk to me and show me his ass. :redneck:

sorry to hear you are upset & confused tarasaur. you know we will always have your back. by which i do mean "back," and not just "ass"

hadn't you considered / suspected this diagnosis for awhile? i know you have brought it up before and liam has been in for testing several times. i am wondering if it is more disappointment at finally having the diagnosis than the diagnosis itself. you must have been at least somewhat prepared for this

Oh, I was totally prepared for the diagnosis but it's kinda like, the reality of it finally hit. I had my mega sad moment with him yesterday. We took a trip to his favorite playground. He wanted to take a walk to the pond at this park, and during our walk is when I lost it and sobbed like a little bitch.

I feel better today. :grimsanta:

i hope you feel better soon Tara

at the end of the day this does not have to be a sad thing.

in my opinion, all such a diagnosis means is that your boy is going to live a slightly different life to what you yourself have been accustomed to living. i know you love your son but if ever in times of overwrought sympathy or pity try to remember there is nothing "wrong" with autism. rather than focusing on what autistic or similar people "miss out on" in life we should focus on the unique pleasures and experiences that their minds enable them to have.
