That sounds like a lie.

I may read it sometime when I'm less tired.

about the facing mortality bit though. i dunno about you guys but i am horrified of death. when i'm down, like the last 3 years, its all i think about. i guess you could call it a "mediocre mind". but to me a beautiful thought is heidegger's view on death. i'm no philosophy expert, but here is the romantic idea i take from it. the concept is being-towards-death. to me, the moral of the story is that with everything we are and do..is death. i like metal, i eat, i sleep, i bla bla bla...i death. death is a part of who we are right now this very moment. and to be afraid of and hate death is to be afraid of and hate who and what we are. :god:

I hate when ideas are expressed in such an ambiguous way. I could try and think of something he may mean by that, with which I agree, (I'm sure everybody could). I'm sure everybody could also find a version/interpretation of that with which they would disagree. Some people seem to happiest by speaking in this manner. I'm not sure whether they don't realise they're doing it, or they realise they have nothing worth saying and are hiding behind their vagueness. "Poetry" is no place to express an idea. Surely if you're actually trying to get some point across, you would attempt to be as concise/clear as possible? Some people may enjoy reading poetry like they may enjoy looking at a painting. Apart from just liking the sounds of the words or liking contrasting colours, people may like trying to interpret what the person meant. What message they are trying to communicate. But if someone is actually trying to make a point, why paint it in a fucking picture!? Please nobody mention animal farm or something.

i know, thats why i suck at philosophy. i basically went to wikipedia, got a general idea and twisted it into my own pretty little picture, and for me, its effective. i would be interested in discussing it. but i don't want to actually slug through the book.

Sure, maybe you read it and it gave you an idea.

But you're gonna have to put it in less ambiguous form (for me at least) to know what you're talking about.

here's a bit from wikipedia.

Death is determinate in its inevitability, but an authentic Being-toward-death understands the indeterminate nature of one's own inevitable death - one never knows when or how it is going to come. However, this indeterminacy does not put death in some distant, futural "not-yet"; authentic Being-toward-death understands one's individual death as always already a part of one.

So death is certain, we just don't know when or how?

Hardly groundbreaking.

so, for an attempt of discussion. if you want, go ahead wikipedia it. you should be able to catch up with me in about five minutes of reading.

first i think we should ask ourselves, why are we concerned with the subject? well, because death is a pretty big deal. its more than likely the end of existence. and this is scary. and to me, it puts how we spend our lives into a big shocking perspective of importance. everything we do is an act of being towards death. as i type this and drink my cawfee, i type and drink on my way to death. when i'm bored and too lazy to do something about it, i'm being bored and lazy on my way to death. whoah! talk about a waste.

so the purpose of the subject, aside from the act of understanding it, is to put everything i do in the context of "this is what i'm doing with my life." to me it puts little petty fears and laziness up against the death. its a motivator you see. he also mentions the authentic individual, who (once again, my little general idea) truly faces petty fears and laziness and lameness, and moral weakness, and lives more fully, because this is it. this is the time he has.

woops, just saw your last post, oh well.

So you mean recognising you have a finite amount of time, and using that as motivation?

If you have friends going out, do you not go with them? Or do you go and drink less? Or go and not drink at all?

And what are your thoughts on "American-style" pizzas?
