Why even bother believing in God?

Can people not accept the fact that we are here without any explanation? Do people need something to guide them because they can't guide themselves? A fear of death and no after-life?

everyone needs something...and sometimes belief in God can help someone get through a hard time, or help them become a better person
Do other people's beliefs really bother you that much? Why do you care what other people believe in?

It's not that I care, I'm just curious why some people do believe in it.

Either because they were raised to, or they are using it as a way to help better themselves, it gives some people hope, and in few cases it allows some to feel better about themselves so they have something to lord over others. The latter being quite unfortunate.
I believe in a creator, but I don't subscribe to any particular belief, and not for any particular reason, I just do.

Why even bother arguing over the existence of such beings in the first place? If you really don't believe in it, the whole idea itself shouldn't really bother you.

There's nothing wrong with trying to make sense of things. Some people are just clueless.

For some people any answer is better than no answer. I'd rather have no answer than one that is evidently made up.
Reasons: comfort, security, fear of death, etc. I'm fine with that. In most cases it seems to be because it's hammered into you in childhood before you learn about anything else.

Bullshit. Why would you make this thread if you didn't care?Let people achieve their desired "happyness" the way they need to.Taking advantage of religion is completely different from believing in something much greater. This is where the problem lies.

i don't care what other people believe. what I do however have a problem with is how people try to push their beliefs onto others.

i dunno, i didn't read any of the posts in this thread. but, i know that my grandparents nourished one of the most good, healthy and beautiful households i've ever experienced while they practiced the worldwide church of god, which is now known as a cult. if everyone in the world was a member of the said, there would be no conflict, but unfortunately, many people are at the worst, atheists.

Atheists are responsible for conflict in the world? Am I a bad person?

While Lummo said it right, I want to say that requiring or needing a belief in something mythical to get by is a fucking weakness.

Couldn't you say the same about painkillers?

I was going to make a post making an analogy to painkillers, beat me to it. Some people can't cope with life without superstition and miracles, sadly.

The analogy can be made, certainly.
However, I don't keep popping pain killers after the situation causing the level of discomfort it requires for me to take them has passed. Religious people tend to still believe after whatever they used religion to help them through has passed. They are kind of like people who do get addicted to pain meds after having had them.

thats how it plays out. its a fine example of how multiculturalism does harm. i think it says something about "truth" too. one invests their purpose in christianity. another invests their purpose in atheism. they are now enemies. in a way, the christians are objectively superior since they stand for the almighty.
its like this...."morbid angel - nothing is not" - how can you defeat that which finds nourishment in your attack? so, why bother arguing for atheism?

thats kinda my point. i'm not against atheism, but it can create bad feelings. is it a good thing to risk breaking the heart of a good christian's faith to serve your atheistic agenda? why even bother?

Very few people go and bother the quiet Christians; they're minding their own business, so nobody cares.
However, Christians tend to be less quiet when then get into larger groups (ie church). They accused the scientific community of trying to subvert traditional values simply because modern scientific knowledge doesn't sync up with ancient theological teachings. You've seen how some of the less informed Christians react when you start talking about such basic principles as evolution, etc. They get into congregations and start rattling on about this and that, and how the extremist leftist agenda is trying to wipe out Christianity, and then they go out and form interest groups that try to put a stop to teaching actual scientific facts.
Even though it's not the individuals that are responsible for this, the fundamental fact remains true of both sides: human beings tend to associate individuals with the actions of a group they are a part of. No single Christian represents all the things the collective is doing, but it's damn near impossible to think that way, isn't it?

Calling Atheism a "religion" or a "belief system" or something is just ignorant.
Would you consider not collecting stamps to be a hobby?

I don't recall the last time a fundamentalist atheist that detonated himself in a bus or a flea market, murdered his daughter for not honoring the faith by marrying whoever the hell she wanted, or carried out forced conversions, inquisitions, and purgings against non-atheists.
thats kinda my point. i'm not against atheism, but it can create bad feelings.
So does religion, more so in fact. Lacking faith doesn't prescribe cruelty and discrimination, unlike so many religions that do so explicitly(especially towards those of different faiths/none).
Sorry but what you're trying to say is quite dumb and reeks of self-righteousness.

would you consider annihilating religion a hobby of yours?
i'm not accusing anyone, and i don't even stand for what i'm saying. its just an observation on how relationships, families, belief systems, bla bla bla bla, the whole scadoodle can be hurt by someone stepping out of line and being atheist. when opposed to religion, atheism has the effect of being a positive (as in the symptom...like not collecting stamps being a hobby) belief system.
how i really feel though is that religion is a tragic fucking delusion. and the worst of it all is believing in an afterlife, which in my opinion prevents one from truly facing mortality.
