Fucking musicians...pfff

I'm quite seriously considering hanging up the Bass and concentrating on the production side of music, I'm having such bad luck with finding some decent muscians that actually have any spark or ambition/presence let alone the two combined.

Why does everyone feel the need to conform to a genre or scene? what happened to the forward thinking pioneers of music? at least within a 100 mile radius of my yard! London is home to milions of people, let alone the outlying counties included yet all I can seem to find are people that want copy or jump on another bands coat tails....

fuckdarnit I love to play too!

what kind of music are you interested in playing baron?

Re: Fucking musicians...pfff

something heavy as fuck but with soul, clean and shouty vox, some odd time sigs but not poncy tech, bluesy and proggy with doomy grooves and some nods to early death/thrash metal but with some major progressions and not taking itself too seriously.

Ideally a three piece with a vocalist guitarist but four piece would do fine as long as the singer can do something other than just sing (keys/samples/bagpipes/eat a roast dinner)

I think therein lies my problem

I'm really into Necrophagist, Obscura, ect type music but I'm not the type that wants to just be "technical". I really dig groovy stuff, something you don't really hear in technical type bands I think. I really want to have a perfect mix of progressive catchy technical riffing with great groove and atmosphere. you know what I'm sayin'?

edit:

and it seems technical riffing now days is really popular/trendy in new bands. but i have two reason for really liking it. 1. for me it's lots of fun to play, in my first band experienced i developed a hatred for repeating riffs and became reaaaaaly bored with everything. 2. i really like the way it sounds, it's really chaotic but at the same time very controlled and organized

i think (imho) that an element of groove is missing from a lot of music these days, any fuckmole can buy a seven string guitar/eight string bass, spend 8 hours a day practising runs and fingerings and write 22/9 riffs that never repeat. a fucking computer program can do that but ALL music (again imho) should have soul and feel and that takes big balls and talent to pull off convincingly.

I'll take Stevie Wonder over Dream Theatre anyday!

and by the above rant i don't mean to infer i have any of the qualities described BUT i'll give it my best shot :redneck:

Fuck, man, I know how you feel.

Tell you what, Pete...why don't you lay down some bass tracks, post 'em on the mabb. You know, come up with something, and one of us will find a way to record what you're looking for. Then you can use that as a better way of finding people.

In fact, if you can give us one of those "somewhere between...." things, I'll throw down some guitar myself.

I agree, and to add on to the repeating thing I was talking about; I don't mind repeating a riff a few normal times but rather over using things fills me with rage.

There's a pretty big line you can walk between running the same riff over and over, and never having a riff repeat. If you're a good songwriter, it shouldn't really be obvious that you're doing one of the other anyway.

I can possibly do that, Irony is tho I write most stuff on guitar!

and about repeating riffs..theres some bands that can do it real well like QOTSA, especially the early stuff where it layers up, switches tempo/feel or becomes mantra like...so I think there can be a time for it.

at the moment I have a pool of about 30/40 ideas that need to be be tidied up, arranged and recorded...but I don't really have a setup to record them myself.

However my good buddy is just setting up his home studio in his new pad so as soon as he does I'll get him to do the dirty work

so finally I have joined a (imho) worthwhile band..went to jam yesterday with the two guitarists from End Of Level Boss http://www.myspace.com/endoflevelboss :bang:

and then proceeded to drink many warm english pints with them and swap horror stories from rock hell with them.

top guys, top grooves and scope to experiment with my humble four strings....

aaaaaaaand relax.

no more auditions with total cunts.

:tit: I hope

my only concern is thier previous bassist was a hot chick. maybe I'll get that boob job finally.....
