I just pre-ordered Home Premium upgrade for $50.

i might build a new machine next year, i'll throw 7 on there if i do i guess

You could run 7 on a 5 yr old machine if you wanted.

OS footprint is too big, i'm not cannibalizing half my laptop's hard drive for a win7 partition which i would use two days a week for playing one game. XP meets that need perfectly fine.

7, allegedly, can scale down to run better than XP on netbooks... which are typically equivalent to 5 yr old normal boxen.

I'm not sure if its really worth it.

This upgrade is a huge huge huge leap forward from Vista in performance, eye candy and functionality. If you are unsure, give the RC a try -- it doesnt expire til next March

Is it possible to scale down 7 to use only <90mb of system memory like a trimmed down XP installation can? Because if not(doubtful, Vista trimmed down still idles at like 700mb on my comp), I really doubt it's going to run faster than XP on old PC's.



Btw netbooks have 1.6ghz cpu's, I'd say it's been 6-7 years since desktops have been in 1-2Ghz territory, my old 2.5Ghz P4 machine was over 5 years old.

Systems are in the 2-4GHz territory still, but what has changed is cores and the amount of cores on the die. Netbooks are not static at 1.6, they range from 1.4-2GHz, single core Atoms for the most part. I have not seen the netbook scaled Windows 7 in the wild (the RC and beta releases were the full splendid mate of mine monty Windows 7 Ultimate) but the slimming in 7 was done at the core and worked outward. Vista trimmed down or not is no reference point to 7. Like I said, though, I haven't seen the scaled down version in action, only read about it, so I can only go on speculation from the developers blogs.

I'll try it once I get my netbook.

Windows 7 can scale down very well, especially when hacked around with.

i'm not really excited about upgrading windows seeing as how i just built this pc last year.. but I'm interested in seeing it.

That system would run absolutely fine then.

pff that rig is weak. my p2 was 400mhz, had 128mb ram, and an 8mb video card. $3500 from gateway 2000!

listen if you really wanna run win7 like decently you're gonna have to shell out for the 400mhz, you know this

Btw, a fellating lover of us just build us a new pc. We're going to pick it up next week. It's one of the best comps around right now with a price class of 1000,- euros. I payed 1100,- orso for everything, and it has all that we need. Still saved me a grand from an iMac, and it has better specs. I'm happy with this decision.

Specs or it did not happen

my laptop pooped out so I bought this: <!-- m -->http://www.ebuyer.com/product/168998<!-- m --> and installed Windows 7 today, all my regular programs are working, - I like it!

2 weeks+ in and i still like it

I cant wait to put it back on this system.
