I am also nearing 40. Career is coming down crashing and I'll be out of a job in a month from all the cuts and bullshit, but I feel strangely liberated.

Career is somewhat jiggly - the workplace just laid off my boss and his boss (two folks who have been with the company for around 25 years now, more or less) due to 'organisational restructuring' by our newly-hired department head. Me and another colleague think we are next so I've been scrambling on updating my CV and portfolio in the past few days.
