Before that I had a Ipod 20 (the old white 4th gen), and an Ipod Video 30gb (gen5). The software just kept getting worse and worse. Zune kicks the shit out of the ipod.

Zune has a click button for quick scrolling, a better interface, better software (Zune>>itunes), better battery life. And thats about all you can really take into account.

Just googled the Zune HD. Meh. Never liked the ipod touch/iphone. I HATE touch screen, and I have no use for an mp3 player that can access the internet. I have a computer for that.

Kind of leads me into the next somewhat related rant about cell phones that are like mini computers. My position is, a cell phone is for calling. Nothing else. I recently saw a commercial making fun of this view point, so I know others feel the same way. Microsoft word on a cell phone? Please. Typing anything on a touch screen keyboard? You might as well just wait until you can use a real computer. I got rid of my cell for this reason. I don't need to call anyone, I have a home phone and a computer.

I've had the thought of just using a laptop with skype as a computer, and its even more practical now with these netbooks. Get the ATT connect card, skype and bam, you have a smart "phone" that beats the shit out of everything. Plus you can connect it to your car stereo and save yourself $500 on one of those fancy touch screen car stereos that kids hook their ipods up to.

the new macbooks, especially the pro's, are way too fucking expensive for what they do and what they are.

we need a new computer at home and we're still doubting about the new, highest spec iMac, or a new PC.

Better interface my ass, and that click doesn't compare to the scroll wheel thing. I will give it to you on the software in its current version, however. I've been testing the latest release since it was um released. I am impressed. As for battery life, it depends on which iPod you're comparing it to.

As for the rant, well... That's the overall direction we're moving in. The host of mobile devices are coming together. Pretty soon you wont have to carry around an mp3 player, cell phone and netbook (for those who like to have all those). They're all moving toward one mobile device rather than a Batman utility belt of devices. I think it is more efficient to have all-in-one mobile devices, personally, so long as the end result is quality for all of its functions. You cellphone, media player and netbook/notebook/pc all have processors. Essentially, they are all computers. Why not make more efficient use?

I don't use a cell phone anymore. Have no use for one.

Either way, I don't think they can make a product that is easy to type on, and will still it in your pocket.

How To Hijack 'Every iPhone In The World'

On Thursday, two researchers plan to reveal an unpatched iPhone bug that could virally infect phones via SMS.

If you receive a text message on your iPhone any time after Thursday afternoon containing only a single square character, Charlie Miller would suggest you turn the device off. Quickly.

That small cipher will likely be your only warning that someone has taken advantage of a bug that Miller and his fellow cybersecurity researcher Collin Mulliner plan to publicize Thursday at the Black Hat cybersecurity conference in Las Vegas. Using a flaw they've found in the iPhone's handling of text messages, the researchers say they'll demonstrate how to send a series of mostly invisible SMS bursts that can give a hacker complete power over any of the smart phone's functions. That includes dialing the phone, visiting Web sites, turning on the device's camera and microphone and, most importantly, sending more text messages to further propagate a mass-gadget hijacking.

"This is serious. The only thing you can do to prevent it is turn off your phone," Miller told Forbes. "Someone could pretty quickly take over every iPhone in the world with this."

Though Miller and Mulliner say they notified scrapple ( AAPL - news - people ) about the vulnerability more than a month ago, the company hasn't released a patch, and it didn't respond to Forbes' repeated calls seeking comment.

The iPhone SMS bug is just one of a series that the researchers plan to reveal in their talk. They say they've also found a similar texting bug in Windows Mobile that allows complete remote control of Microsoft ( MSFT - news - people )-based devices. Another pair of SMS bugs in the iPhone and Google's ( GOOG - news - people ) Android phones would purportedly allow a hacker to knock a phone off its wireless network for about 10 seconds with a series of text messages. The trick could be repeated again and again to keep the user offline, Miller says. Though Google has patched the Android flaw, this second iPhone bug also remains unpatched, he adds.

The new round of bugs aren't the first that Miller has dug up in the iPhone's code. In 2007, he became the first to remotely hijack the iPhone using a flaw in its browser. But while that vulnerability gave the attacker a similar power over the phone's functions, it required tricking the user into visiting an infected Web site to invisibly download a piece of malicious software. When Miller alerted scrapple in July of that year, the company patched the vulnerability before Miller publicized the bug at the Black Hat conference the following month. A symptom that society in general is breaking down. Yes. Texting is also a cause of the break down in social communication. Although this could be again seen as a symptom of the decay in society, I see it more as a cause of society changing as a result of a new, more convent technology that eliminates most of the social interaction of conversations. In fact as I have said, it ruins other social interactions. For instance, one of my friends is always on his phone, staring down at it and typing away every 30 or so seconds. Eliminates personal communication because he is too busy screwing with his phone. Now we don't even use phones for calling, we use them to send a 140 character email.

The term "almost" applies to the cell phone generation somewhat growing up, learning that they look like jackasses, and new technology (once again). I have noticed that people with touch screens text less, because they have to stare at it, and they often misspell quite often, leading to them not to want to use it as much.

FCC queries AT&T, scrapple on Google Voice iPhone app rejection

Yeah, we're pretty much all peeved by scrapple suddenly ejecting all traces of Google Voice from the app store, but now it looks to have drawn the ire of the Federal Communications Commission, as well. According to a report from The Wall Street Journal, the agency has sent out three letters, one each to scrapple, AT&T, and Google. To the latter company, it asked for a description of the Google Voice app and whether previous Google apps have been approved for the store (it has, but that's another interesting story). To Cupertino, it's asking the phone manufacturer to explain itself over the sudden exorcism and what involvement, if any, AT&T had in this decision. The report doesn't make a direct indication of what the letter to the carrier said, but we can imagine it's similar to what scrapple got, plus some doodles at the end of a stick figure letting out an exasperated sigh. In a statement today, FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski said it "has a mission to foster a competitive wireless marketplace, protect and empower consumers, and promote innovation and investment." Hey Julius, while you're at it, can you see about Skype and Slingbox for us, too? Thanks.

Update: TechCrunch has published the three letters sent out, all very interesting reads. The FCC asks scrapple specifically if any approved VoIP apps are allowed to be used over AT&T's 3G network, and more generally what are the "standards for considering and approving iPhone applications" and more details into the approval process. It also asks for the contact information of all developers of rejected Google Voice apps, presumably for further investigation. In the Google letter, it seems to be asking if Voice will be able to be utilized in any capacity over the web, without inclusion in the iTunes store. Unsurprisingly, a number of questions to scrapple and AT&T concern the carrier's involvement in which apps or types of apps get rejected. All companies have until August 21st to respond and can request confidentiality on all or portions of their response.

I did the same. Some people got pissed at me because it would be over 140 characters, therefore sending two.

This was before everyone had unlimited texting.

i dont see the problem with texting at movies as long as they dont have the key tones on. its not like there is personal communication going on during a movie. if im talking to someone and texting is causing a disturbance, they are obviously not that interested in what I have to say so whatever, and ill just flip their phone closed or tell them to stop, but i still really dont care. whatever. its their lose anyway if they want to be wrapped up in a phone all the time. and who says texting is impersonal anyway? I definitely have had very personal conversations through texts. and when im texting its not like all my focus and attention is taken from texting. my brain works well enough that i can multi task efficiently, surprisingly enough. Im sure some people cant do that, but they need to work on their brain power and control anyway. go technology!
