i was reminded of an important lesson today

and it was taught by egg omelette flipping. i'm talking, grease your pan, set your egg, grip your pan, flick of the wrist, complete 180 omelette flipping.



my story



it was the a.m. tailgate party for the husker football game. i was in charge of cooking and everyone was already fed, so the rest of the commodities were pretty much drunken free-for-all. i was cooking an omelette, the base was set, and it was ready to flip. as a precaution, the normal method until that point had been to just fold it in half with a spatula and let it cook through. but i got a craving for giving the 180 wrist flip, head over heals method a shot, especially since i had nothing to lose...chances are, no one was going to eat it anyway, since they were drinking coors light.



i've tried it a few times before, and it always failed. but this time, as always, conscious of the importance of adequate butter lubrication and the "wrist-flick," i decided to calm down and collect myself and do what i have never done before while attempting this method, which is to "let it rip" and try something new, which for me was to exaggerate the strength, heigth, and wrist-flick. i found within myself the all-too-unfamiliar train of thought that is total focus and silencing of all inhibitions, and i let it rip....bam...i fucking nailed it. i just did it, no doubts whatsoever, no concern as to whether or not i would succeed, and coincidentally in retrospect, an undeniably sense that failure was not an option.



it was a perfect flip, it landed squarely in the pan with only the slightest crease...okay so it was almost perfect.



but i guess the moral of the story is this. i'll offer a song lyric analogy from the necraphogist song - still born one

so, i could have flipped the omelette over and over again in the same fashion and attitude and technique which had led me to previous failures. but, obviously practicing a failed method over and over again did, could, and would only lead to failure. i had to try something totally different, leave my weakness and comfort zone and attempt exploration of a method and light i had never even seen. how did i know it would work? i couldn't possibly know since there was no evidence. but after i tried a new method, and discovered the light, it all became clear.



anywhoo, who here has successfully wrist-flipped an omelette? its a lovely feeling.
